Wear ring clearance for 02 GTX 4-tec

Hey Guys,

What is the clearance for the impeller to wear ring. The manual says .014" but I have seen .040" thrown out here on the site.

The reason I ask is, tonight I got my replacement impeller and wear ring and went to install it.

When I installed it the wear ring, it just dropped right in. Pushed it in with finger pressure only.

The ID of the wear ring is running 6.137". My old impeller OD is 6.126".

The new impeller I received today is 6.104" on the OD. Owners manual says clearance shouldn't exceed .014" and I am at .0165" right out of the box. I feel the clearance on this is way to much per the book and being brand new. Am I right or is this just fine?

the 4tec wear rings do usually just drop right in and some have screws that hold them in place to keep from slipping.

anything under .020" is pretty good, it will be fine.

actually, the 02 and 03 4tec has the crappy plastic pump housing that will flex and wear the wear rings out. mostly a problem with the supercharged models due to the extra hp. sd changed to an Aluminum pump housing in 04 and refused to acknowledge there was a problem with the plastic housings. you just have to change the wear rings every 15 hours.

Thank you for the reply. I decided to go ahead and install it yesterday morning.

Cavitation out of the hole is better and gained another 5 mph on the top end. Still about 5 mph from where it was as new.

Thinking closing the clearance up would help.
