Want to add a valve to water supply hose

So after reading the owner's manual I got the idea that instead of buying a hose pincher should I ever need a tow or if I lose one of the engines and need to get back, that I would rather add an in-line valve to the exhaust water supply hose where the manual states to pinch the hose.

I'm aware that if left closed it can damage things (same if the hose pinchers were accidentally left on), but aside from that I don't see any reason not to add them. I found brass ones at HD for $10 each. I could always leave them open and remove the handles (keep them in the glove or flare kit) and simply put the handle on should I ever need to close the valve.

Anyone else do this?

I usually see plastic valves used. Wrap your DESS key around it if you ever have it closed. That way you cant start your boat and you will remember to open the valve back up :)

Hey Jpass I have actually seen this done here on these forums. I wish I had a link for you but someone here had a good illustration on how they did it. Sorry for lack of info.

I actually want to do this myself.

I planned on simply putting it in line with current hose. That's why I prefer the barbed fitting. I may have to cut a small section of hose out, but I won't know until I test fit. I just wanted to make sure there was nothing I was missing with this idea. Towing with our Nautique was never an issue if we had a dead motor (which we never did).

Being that this is a twin engine boat there is always the possibility of losing a motor and I'd like to get back home on the second motor without having to keep my speeds too low to avoid water ingestion. We also have seatow and I'd like to be prepared to not ingest water should we ever need a tow.

I'll post pics after I install.

Also recall a thread on this and a warning to ensure there is no construction - i.e. inner diameter of valve the same as the hose.

For now I have red zap straps around the hoses that need to be pinched so cannot forget which and the pinchers (along with spare plug) zap strapped to battery post but will eventually do same. Couple other projects first.

Look forward to the pics and good luck.

Yes I have done this mod to my 180 and I have had to use it too. When you need a tow stressing about investing water in you engine is not something you want on top of whatever else has just happened. If your in fresh water any material the plumbing chains provide will be fine. If your running in salt water go for a plastic valve.

We run mostly fresh with the occasional dip in salt. We also either fresh water dunk after salt or will run some salt away through the system, so I'm not worried about using brass, but I'll definitely look into the plastic as well. JUst going to put them in line according to the manual.

What diameter is that hose? The hose I believe I'm supposed to use (according to pic from repair manual) is 3/4" OD 1/2" ID. The one in your pic looks bigger.
The hose on my setup is 3/4 ID. This is the factory setup for a Challenger CS 2006. I have the 215 HP motor with supercharger and intercooler. The line tapped is the line going from Pump take off to the intercooler. The filter is there for the intercooler to keep debris down.

We have twin 155's so the line in the pic I posted above is smaller than what you have with the SC motor.

Thanks for clarifying.

After:
