I have a 99 seadoo sportster with twin engines. Today on the lake it was running fine and then all of the sudden it had a bad vibration in the right aide engine. I shut it down and noticed a bunch of stuff floating around so i though i may have sucked up something. Got out and looked and couldnt find anything. It starts up fine and runs but it gets a vibration really bad around 3k rpms. Where should i begin to look? Wear ring, shaft, impeller? Just looking for a place to get started.

Did any water get to the engine?

I will pull the pump tomorrow. The wear ring doesnt look all that great just from looking at it from the bottom. Will post back with pictures. -

Did you look under the boat and make sure there isn't anything wrapped around the impeller shaft. I've had this happen on my sportster a couple times this year alone. And it's just weeds that wrap them selves around the shaft. Not really the impeller....

Ran the boat on the hose just for the hell of it. Didnt vibrate at all under throttle. The wear ring looks as though it has some damage. Does this mean anything significant?!

I've had this issue too when the impeller boot (the rubber boot at the impeller) started to deteriorate. It split and looked normal when viewing the boat on a trailer. It was only was forced into the water stream when the impeller was rotating. Cutting the split piece off stopped the vibration. The chunk missing from the wear ring is probably your issue but this is just something else to consider.

Well I pulled the pump and there are definetly some gouges in the pump. I found a small piece of plastic in the pump that may have caused this. Do you guys think the wear ring (which is obviously shot) could cause the nasty vibration? Also, where can I find a neoprene seal for the pump? SBT?

Is there anything else that I should be doing to the pumps while they are out as well? Also, do I need to remove the impeller in order to remove the wear ring. The pump that was good the wear ring slid right out. Not so sure about the other. Thanks in advance

Your local dealer may have a neoprene seal.

While the parts are out, I would change the pump oil and see how the bearings look and feel. Pull the driveshafts and make sure they're straight. Look at the carbon seal and boot on both.

You might get the ring to come out easily if you put the pump in the freezer overnight. I tried this but had to cut it out anyway. If you take the impellers out you can clean up the blades and remove the small nicks with a file.

Thanks. I was just looking at the shop manual and it says for the twin motors to use "The right stuff" sealant as opposed to the neoprene seal. It only lists the seal for the single engine models. Can I still use a seal on mine? Seems like it would be much easier to remove down the road.

Yes... I highly recommend using the neoprene seal. If you use "The right stuff" or RTV... it will be a total bastard to get apart next time.

Doc......do you think the wear ring in its current state would cause my issue? The splines on the shft all looked good. I will be cleaning them up and re-greasing them. Just find it hard to believe that 2 chunks of plastic would make a whole boat vibrate and shudder when under power. But then again, thats why I come here for answers.....

A bucket of ICE Water will probably be colder then the freezer. Air is a lousy conductor versus water which is a great conductor.

Both wear rings came out easily with a pair of pliers. Unreal...they just slid right out. I still have an impeller tool on the way to pull them impeller and check the assembly out.

It's hard to say.. but yes, it's possible. Basically, when the impeller gets to that spot... it's like a tooth missing out of a gear. I know when I pick up some seaweed... my boat or ski will shutter. Once it's clear... it's smooth.
