Ok guys, as you may know by now i live on Lake Erie and just purchased my first Jet Skis. as i know i will want to take them out exploring this summer, i know i should look into buying a VHF marine radio as most cell's probably wont work out on the water. Any suggestions?:boxing_smiley:

IM on Erie to. You ever make your way across to longpoint for pottahawk piss-up? I have the Standard Horizon HX750S handheld and its submersible and floats and has a High Intensity strobe light next model up has gps and i think bluetooth.

where is longpoint? im in ashtabula, ohio. canada is main reason i want one, i know im going to try the 24mile trek a time or two, i have friends who live in brantford at one of my companys canadian locations

Cant miss it its a 40km sand spit the juts out into the middle of lake erie and would be the closet to brantford. it across the lake from Erie. The bay is called longpoint bay and main town on longpoint bay are port dover, turkey point, port rowan and longpoint. If your meeting friends from brantford id boat into Port Dover.

ok ya i know what you speak of! thats where i was looking to take some summer ski trips, i live 20mins from erie, in fact i was just out there tonight

its o long trip across makesure you have all the right saftey stuff. and lots of fuel. Try to put a can of gas on the back of your ski incase you run out. Im on the inner bay near port rowan my folks alway boat across to erie next ime i talk to them ill ask how long it takes them. But you need to find out how long your fuel will last befor making the trip. OH also you should have a good gps and compass

Just got a Uniden MHS75. Fully submersible, 1, 2.5, and 5 watt output. Haven't tried it yet, we'll see in a few weeks.

Fuel stations!

I hope you bring plenty of gas!.....I don't think there are any fuel stations on Lake Erie:rofl:

Should at least be waterproof for sure, especially for use in a Seadoo. Most are maximum 5 watt output with an option for 1 watt when you're talking to someone close or in a harbour area. The one I got got is a nice small size, which is good. Can clip it on your person with the belt clip or attach it to your boat. This one will still transmit/receive while plugged into the power adaptor. I'm no expert on these but it just feels rugged compared to others I've seen.
I see you have a pwc, not sure if they have a power adaptor. You'll definitly need to clip it on you and it MUST be waterproof/submersible.

My boss had a uniden not sure what model but it got shorted out when his boat sank and was stuck out on lake erie for 30min befor someone noticed him. My SH has been very good never had any problems.

ohh theres tons of pumps on the water at 500% inflation

i just bought a brand new Standard Horizon's like sportsters, submersable, etc for $75 new shipped off ebay today

How much storage do you have on your ski? youll want to have a couple basic tools maybe a liter of oil GPS will be a must. Also inspect the skis befor heading across look for any loose hoses, oil/gas leaks ect ect. Other things to consider- where to stay if the weather gets bad I know the lake well, grew up there my whole life. The weather can change within minutes. If the winds pick up or temperature change and you could be in big swells or thick fog. Ive been in fog so thick we could hardly see the front of my friends 31ft doral NOT fun trying toget back to the cottage. You need to be very awear of the weather when making the ride across plan ahead tell people what route your going to take when your leaving and when youll arive. Id call a friend back in the us when you get into dover and call them again when your on your way home. Thoughs call could save you life in an emergancy, gives a time line of when and where you were to help find you better  Lake erie has over 1700 KNOWN ship wrecks so be safe

i just dont know anything about Standard Horizon who they are etc..

i mean i know uniden they seem to have been around all over and everywhere.

i just dont really know what i should be looking for in a VHF

you want a vhf. channel 16 is coast guard. NEVER say mayday unless it a real emergency. Its actually against the law to use one with out a licence, I dont think they enforce it unless your abusing it. But people do use them just use other channels to talk.

You should research the correct way to use one
And you should know these.

Sportster, oh ya i know what you mean about lake, i have lived on it all 26 years of my life, been out on it when some waterspouts where way to close for comfort. the plan is launch, ride coast to Erie, fuel, then cut across. When i go ill make sure my buddy is with me on my spare ski, and ya def let someone on shore know.
There is a decent amount of room, here is a list of what is packed in each ski.
  • 2 - spare spark plugs
  • crescent wrench, channel locks, screwdrivers, couple standard metric wrenches
  • Tow Strap
  • Marine waterproof jumper cables
  • Whistle
  • Flare gun
  • VHF Radio when they arrive
  • Spare quart of oil
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Compass
  • Waterproof map of lake erie where i have marked marinas with fuel =)
  • i need to find a good GPS for marine use any ideas????
