What suggestions are there to to loosen a stuck phillips head screw in the valve body asembly of a new Makuni super BN carb. I started with a new phillips bit and was very careful, but now the head is starting to deform. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you could apply some heat with the tip of a soldering iron to help break it loose...
I actually use a tight phillips bit in a 1/4 socket attached to a small ratchet or palm ratchet and apply as much downward pressure as I can to help not strip the heads...

good luck...

To get the carbs apart... you need a hand impact screwdriver. They will pop-out without hurting even the most stubborn screws. BUT... if you messed up the head... you may have to drill it.

Thanks I will see if I can find one. What are your thoghts on my sucess now that the head is a little chewed up?

I will try heat and cold. The bit in a 1/4 socket is exactly what I used to start with. All the others came out easy that way. Its always one

DO NOT HEAT THE CARB !! There is a rubber gasket behind that block... and a mylar check valve. Heat will destroy them. You need a hand impact.

I've owned the one below going on 25 years now. It's a tool that is well worth having in the tool box.

The combination of down, and rotational force caused by the hammer blow... along with the "Shock" will break even rusted bolts loose. As far as knowing if you will have success... it's hard to say since I can't see the screw.

I'll second what the DR. said and when you get them out just replace them with ss allen cap screws. Even if you strip those out you still can grab the heads with a vise grips.

hmm allen cap screws I`ll have to remember that. but some of mine are counter sunk. I`ve had no issues with limited heat on any delicate screw with the tip of a good soldering iron. even the grate screws that are in the brass/plastic ferrules on the GTX.
I wouldn`t think the OP would hit it with a torch kit.

good tip on the impact driver!, had one from the old MX days, now those were some tuff buggers to get out...
