Bought a 2001 challenger from a dealer about 2yrs ago - went to buy some Mercury 2stroke performance plus oil for it and the counter person took it back and told me to use the DFI - was synthetic and a better oil - I have now come to realize it is not only more money it is not recomended for use in an EFI engine - I have used this oil in it for 2yrs - Is there a problem with this - I would like to be educated before I go back to the dealer and say WTF! Thanks in advance - JF

OK... yes, the synthetic oil will offer better protection, but you should NEVER mix different 2-stroke oils, even if they are from the same manufacture. 2-stroke oils are known to congeal when different types are mixed. The result is a dead engine since it will no longer pump thought the system.

if you want to change to the synthetic oil, then you need to clean out your tank first.

OR....

My opinion is to go back to the dealer, and smack the guy behind the counter, and tell him to give you what you asked for.

FYI... there is nothing wrong with the oil you were using before... in that boat.

Just to Clarify

So for 2 years you have already been using the synthetic oil? or this just happened?

If you are already using it and have been for 2 years then I would stick with that.

Or you could switch to the right oil but you would need to clean out you entire system because like DrHonda said you can't mix the 2 oils.

In my opinion (if I read your post right) you should just stick with what the guy recommended 2 years ago and continue to reap the benefits of full synthetic.

But you still might want to go back and slap him for costing you more in the long run LOL

Same thing happened to me!!

I recently purchased a 2003 Seadoo Utopia with a 240 Merc EFI and had the same thing happen to me. Boat was purchased from a dealer who provided a gallon of oil at pick up. I diligently poured the oil into the reservoir only to find out later that it was not the right type for the engine. I came across this thread while searching the net for implications.

From what I can tell, other than price, other individuals (qualified or possibly not) have noted that DPI/Optimax oil does not mix as well with gasoline as it is not designed to do so. I'm not sure of the validity of this argument but I am certainly skeptical. I did speak with a certified Merc Tech who told me that the DPI/Optimax oil is fine (despite what it says in the EFI manual).

So now I'm sitting with a tank full of DPI oil wondering what I should do ... drain it or continue spending $50 per gallon of oil? More importantly, will the DPI oil really provide any less protection than the TCW3?

...Mike
