Used Speedster--bad to buy with Mercury M-2 engine?? Help?

I am/was seriously considering a used 2004 240hp Speedster for sale locally. However, I found a post on this site after running some searches that said that parts for the Mercury M-2 engines are "all but impossible" to come by through standard channels and that only Speedsters with Rotax should be considered.

Is this good advice/true? If so that's too bad as I was really seriously considering this boat. I was thinking about making an offer this weekend--so any suggestions appreciated.

Who ever gave you that information does not know what they are talking about. You can get parts for the M2 at any Mercury dealer world wide. They are a great engine, but be sure to have it checked out by a certified Mercury technician before you buy it. If the engine has any serious issues it can be an expensive proposition.

Basic maintenance costs are the same, but if you break something major, then they are a great deal more expensive.

Think 1200.00 to replace an impeller and wear housing (dealer), and depending on if you can do it yourself 3500.00 (you) to 13000.00 (dealer) to change out an engine.

What about what people say (not my experience) that Seadoo dealers will not work on M engine boats?

from what i gathered/read from the forum...no way would i get the mercury or Supercharged boat/ski. Being new boat, cant see spend'n time/attention to a unit that can fail, so easy (supercharger).

They wont ! You need to find a Mercury shop to service the Mercury. Most Sea-Doo dealers do not know anything about the Mercs, and can not get parts for them. But in the long run, there are a lot more Mercury dealers than Sea-Doo dealers.

Thanks for the feedback. Those quotes for major repairs on the Mercury definitely give me pause--this is my first boat purchase.

Was the first year of the 4-tec Rotax powered Speedster 2003? And were these limited to 155hp until 2006? That's what I seem to find but wanted to confirm.

You can find parts by serching the internet, also there is a good cd manual that is very detailed for repairs. I have a Mercury 240hp in a 2003 seadoo and I like seadoo engines, but my engine has worked out very well. I would buy another one again. Some of the guys on this site are die hard Seadoo fans and nothing else. Mine has been very reliable IMO.

Mercury M2

I have a 2002 Speedster with the 240hp M2 and my buddy had the 210hp Mercury. The engine has been great for both of us. The motor runs strong, requires normal maintenance and has been very reliable. I like it. I have never had a Rotax motor, so I can't say they are better or worse. I can just tell you I have been very happy with my Mercury. I downloaded the manual that's available on this site. I do all my own maintenance. Parts are definately expensive. I did have to get a new impeller, wear ring and intake grate. But thats because a tyne broke off the grate and went through the impeller damaging the wear ring as well. Total cost of parts with my providing the labor was $1100. I don't know how much it costs to repair the Rotax, so I can't comment. But as far as a fast, responsive and so far reliable engine for me and my buddy, no complaints. Hope this helps.
