ok i have the 97 spx 717 it wouldnt rev over 1500 rpms. one of you guys told me to change fuel lines and clean carb. i cleaned carbs changed lines and re adjusted the low and high jets. it runs alot better but still same problem.but now it dies at 4500 rpms. its getting plenty of fuel to carbs, but it looks like the one in the back isnt getting as much as the one in the front. both plugs are wet with fuel when i pull them out. if you feather the gas and keep it under 4500 rpms you can ride for an hour or more with no problems. clean or change plugs and still the same thing. i found a loose ground wire bolted on top of coil mounting bolt.fixed that still same thing. its almost like its loosing spark at high rpms, but not sure.do these machines have a high and low coil/ stator? please help im to the point of making an artificial reef out of it or a flower pot. could it be bad gas?

It could be bad gas...if you replaced the fuel lines and cleaned the carbs and left the bad gas in there...it's like taking a shower after a long day of yard work, and putting on your dirty cloths....you get the same bad smell. Change the fuel...
Keep us posted.

You might have more crap in you internal filters. If you rebuilt them you know how fine they are. Dump the gas and change the spark plugs with fresh ones, properly gaped. If it still doesn't work check the internal filters.
Keep us posted on your progress.

my (girlfriend's daughter's) 97 SPX has a 787, not a 717. i think you have RAVE valve issues. are the spark plugs pointing straight up thru the center of the seat hole, or leaning over to the right about 30 degrees?

717?

dereck is correct. A 1997 SPX has a 787 engine. This is the same engine/electrical system that has voltage reg( rectifier) problems that cause the ski to surge at higher RPM'S. Check the battery voltage with a volt meter while you rev the engine a few times. If the voltage goes over 14.5 volts then your rectifier is bad and probably giving you a bad surging condition.
This overcharging is not doing your battery any favors either!!

ok changed fuel lines cleaned carbs and changed gas. decided to pull a plug out and run it. well whenever it gets to the point of cutting off i loose all spark. (running with one plug)could that be the stator? cuts out about 3500rpms
