I just been through hell trying to figure why my boat is not running. I did not have a computer so I wanted to document my experiences.
Theory: Fuel, Fire, Compression and SUCK, SQUEEZE, BANG, AND BLOW.
It's that easy. YEAP!
So you start with an engine that does not catch when the starter is engaged. The means you hear the whirr whirr but no purr.
OK unless your rings are shot or you ran the engine without oil, let's assume the compression is good. So that leaves us Fuel and Fire. This is the easiest way to see if you fuel:

Remove the two screws holding down the fuel rail, hold the fuel rail just above the inlets, and start the motor. It's that easy! In my case I had two fuel injectors not working and one fuel injector working.
Now what? Is the fuel injector bad? Or is the signal to the fuel injector bad? By using a NOID Light, you can see if you are getting a command to the injector.
Now that I know I have the fuel injector working what about the FIRE part? Use this:
This is an Inline Spark Checker. There is are other kinds that throws a spark, ah I would be a bit Leary of those considering a open spark in the bilge might be risky.
Put this tester inline and start the engine you can see the light illuminating. That will indicate that the coil is getting enough energy to the spark plug. Now simply replacing spark plugs is a cheap solution.
Now once done with all that, it's time to check for good voltage.
Clamp on the negative side of a voltmeter to the battery:
Then start probing:
The top part of the fuse is the 12 volts. The bottom part is the supply to the different circuits.
I hope this helps. I have been very frustrated by this whole process and learned a lot. Granted this is not a complete guide as I left off the voltages and harness check. Think of this as a rough guide for a newbie.
Here is my original posting: http://www.seadooforum.com/showthread.php?65728-Engine-turns-over-but-no-purr
Please please if you know of something better please add it to the bottom. After all this might become a sticky!
