Troubles with our boat

Hi...I need help! We purchased our used boat in 2006. We used it quite a bit for a few summers. Then it sat and sat for 2years. On top of that my husband did not cover it and the interior just melted and disolved into itself. We paid $13,000 for it and unfortunately since we are not the original owners; the seadoo distributor in our area will not work on it! So we found someone (a mechanic) to come look at it and he said it is worthless and offered $500 to take it. Long story short, we finally found a shop that works on boats and it was the carborator due to the bad fuel (we also never winterized it). He fixed the mechanics of the boat and winterized it. He also referred us to a shop to totally refurbish the upholstry inside. To the tune of $5000 we were back in business as of the fall/early winter of 2010. We ran it only once or twice early last summer (2011) and it seemed fine. We did not run it at all this summer (2012) until yesterday. It had a full tank of gas last year and I noticed it was almost empty yesterday. We charged the battery and started the boat. Shortly after we left our boat lift it started to beep, than blue smoke and than it died. We rowed our boat home. We did/ and have not checked the oil as of this morning. Any words of wisdom would be most appreciated! :(

Hi & welcome to the forum.

Sorry for your problem. I'm surprised that it ran on last yrs gas or didn't crack the block or jugs with Ice over the winters.

I don't understand your comment about ...."We did/ and have not checked the oil as of this morning."....did you or didn't you?????

So, did you check the oil before you ran the boat?
use the correct oil? Replace the oil in-line filter before running?

I think we had it winterized the last 2 falls (I know we did fall before last because that is when we had the boat fixed and the mechanic did it) and always made sure it had a full tank of gas. We did not have a winter last year...we are located in the Southeast I think we only had maybe 5 days of temps below 32 degrees. Sorry about the typo...no we have not checked the oil. Unfortunately, my husband does that. I just ask my husband and he said no. We have not done any of the above before attempting to run it yesterday. It was my thought that it might be the oil because of the smoke. Also, as I mentioned the gas tank was almost empty...could it evaporate? Or does that mean my husband did not winterize it last year?

I think you and your husband needs to do this. GET A MANUAL and read it front to back then do it again to get familiar with all the parts and procedures. Seadoo boats are pretty reliable but they don't maintain themselves.

Pardon me for being harsh but these are not $100 toys that can be thrown away if they break. You now have $18K invested , if maintained properly they will last a long time & give you yrs of enjoyment.

Please keep asking question to this forum there are many experts her to help you to get on the right track.
Check the oil,
check the pump oil,
check the compression in the motor then report back to us.
You have a great boat.

If you have the 2001 Utopia 185 ( as stated in your avitar ) , I would think that you have the Mercury 2 stroke engine. You may want to post over there in that section.. The Mercury m2 / 4 Tec are totally different animals..
