Trouble with driftwood getting stuck in impeller

For the first week of riding my new (to me) '05 RXP, I had no problems with impeller clogs. Now, I've had three instances where a small piece of petrified driftwood had sucked up in the intake and jammed between the impeller and the wear ring.

The first time that happened, I had to get a friend to go back to the boat ramp, and bring my car and trailer 15 miles away to where I was stuck. I had to remove the intake grate and use a chisel to break the wood so it would become dislodged.

Today it happened two more times, both at launch. The ramp had some debris that I didn't see. I had to pull the ski out twice - the second time also having to remove the grate to clear the piece of wood.

This is getting to be troublesome. Is there an aftermarket strainer or something I can put over the intake to keep out small pieces of petrified wood?

Any tips to clearing these jams?

I would think that you may have just had some realy bad luck or may need to stay away from that area that you keep geting that wood from.

I encounter all kinds or crap floating in the water. I try to avoid it as much as possible. Keep you eyes scanning the water in front of you and I bet you'll see more stuff to avoid. I learned a long time ago to keep my head moving around looking for idiots in boats ready to run my BUTT over and crap in the water...now its second nature. If it's floating you should be able to see it and avoid it... there isn't much else you can do, as it's nature of the beast...Jet pumps and floating crap are like magnets.
