Trailer lock ?

I've been worrying about keeping my sea doos safe. They are sitting on my trailer in my drive way and most days no one is home during the day. Is there any way of protecting them besides tying up a big dog to them? What is the best lock to get?

you can put cables/trains thru the wheels or put nasty lock at tongue, but what about, red-heading a "eye-bolt" into the driveway, right under the axle, then rap chain around it and thru the hoop...

It really depends on how concerned you are. I store mine in my garage....so I don't lock anything. When I am at my cottage and the trailer is parked at the boathouse I use a coupler lock (one that goes in the ball with a bar over the top) and chain the trailer to my other two trailers. If someone want to steal them...they will steal them. They can always just remove the coupler and put on one of their own, they could cut the chain, etc.

If you are really concerned I would use a heavy duty coupler lock (although there is a thread on here about someone who's coupler lock was broken and his doos were stolen) while also chaining the two trailer wheels together so they don't roll. I would also park the trailer out of plane sight, maybe a back yard or something, if this is not an option I would park my car/truck/van as close as I can get infront of the trailer. That is the best you can do other than storing them in a garage.

Just giving you some ideas. Hope they help, I would hate to see anybodies toys stolen!!

Thanks for the ideals. I think I'm going to try the chain through the wheels first, don't think the wife would like the eye bolt in the drive way too much LOL She would be like

hahaha ya...I wouldn't do that anyways....I would rather the person stealing my doos to cut the chain rather then taking the easy way out and driving off with the chain still attached, pulling the eye bolt right out of my driveway and leaving a big hole to fill!!

lol...they can cut chain at wheel, but once they look around and see it underneath wrapped to axle, there gonna walk away, and if they did try, It'll make/presume make tons of noise, that they'll still pass on it...

Ya thats true about the noise....but there are some pretty dumb people out there. In reality...all we can do is try and stop people from stealing our stuff....if they really want it they will get it. A couple of stong guys could take the doo right off the trailer and into the bed of a truck or into a cargo trailer too....best thing to do is keep them out of sight or hard to get at!

Matt

I agree guys if they want it bad enough they'll get them. I try to keep my truck pulled in tight to them to block the view. I live in a quite neihborhood all it would take is for someone just driving by and they would be gone.

Thats the good thing about quiet neighbourhoods...not a lot of people drive by. I'm sure you will be fine with minimal security measures....I would at least get a coupler lock thou. Best of luck!

Matt

dont be fooled by quiet neighborhood, I live in one and my car got broken into. Right in front of my house, stole bunch of stuff. now I got a nice alarm with airhorns so it will wake up people.

but overtons.com has some security stuff you can get, like couple lock and the boot for the wheel. but you would also want to chain the ski to the trailer atleast so they cant just lift it up to their own trailer.

Same here. Now I put a crappy broken looking stereo and leave my glove box open to show it really is empty.

I stick a bicycle u-lock through the wheel and around the leaf spring of the trailer. That is less obvious (until you try to roll it!) than the lock on the hitch.

I recommend covers to make them look less attractive. The crappier the covers, the better.....makes it look like they are total beaters. If you have a flashy new cover, throw a crappy tarp over the cover.

It is problematic that the ski could be carried off a locked trailer. But A LOT has to be going on at the same time - 500lb ski is a back breaker for 4 average guys. Isn't it just easier to steal something else somewhere else?

if your really really really concerned, these go for just under 200

actaully some in use on a boat trailer at the ramp last weekend, honestly thought parking security nailed the guy then i saw him take them off and load his boat

heres for specifically for trailers, much cheaper also, at around $70 http://www.trailerlock.com/?gclid=CKPD5JHu7JUCFRJuxwodxim-fQ

it adds a lil bracket to one of the lugs, that is held by the lug nut, then the lock can be removed and installed any time

Theft?

The one thing that amazes me, was already brought up. And thats if someone wants it bad enough, they'll get it.

I learned the hard way. I had restored a 1969 Chevy C-10, looked sharp, painted deep blue, had a high performance 350 with a posi trac 4:11 rear end.

I had a small two man boat with a trolling motor on it, in the back. I went out fishing and when I got back, my passenger side door was pried open with a big pry bar and the window was broken. All the damage to steal a $100 dollar Pioneer stereo. From that day forward, after the damage was repaired, I just left the doors un-locked. Figuring if they wanted it bad enough, I'd give them easy access, hoping they didn't tear up my truch to get it.

A jet ski?........sitting on a trailer, locked down to the drive way or with a wheel lock; if thieves spotted it, wanted it, they'd wait for the right moment, bring a truck and a couple buddies, lift it from the trailer and toss it in the back of their truck. They don't need to steal the trailer too!.........

as a coworker said: "If I was going around stealing stuff I will not go in bad neighborhood to find it, I would look at nice places where people are at work all day"

Also I did mention if they really want it they can come in with their own trailer and 4 guys can lift the ski up. chain the ski to the trailer or something else.

Like was said before, if they want it, they take it. The best you can do is deter them enough so that they look elsewhere for an easier target.

When we first bought our two ski's, we could only keep them in the driveway. I was very unhappy with this, but I did the best I could to make them look tough to steal. I pulled one wheel off the trailer and set the axle on the driveway. I had two locks on the coupler up front. I ran a braided cable through the tie-down loops on the ski's and the trailer. I also ran another braided cable around the center post between the garage doors.

Now I keep the ski's on stands in the garage and the trailer is locked up behind the fence on the side of the house (just barely fits).

Just do your best to make it look hard to get them.

And I also agree with the idea of getting insurance. It not helps to repay the cost of replacing a stolen ski, but it will also help cover costs when you do something stupid like run both ski's into each other (that's a whole other story....)

I tend to go for the thick motorcycle cables (as opposed to chains, since they are harder to cut through)for around the wheel and trailer frame. Yes, easy to bypass if they bring their own wheel, pop mine off, put theirs on and take off. But again, who wants to go through that much hassle to steal a boat.

Also, a lock on the tongue.

AND I keep it in a garage most of the time. AND insured. Video cameras mounted over my driveway when at home and not in the storage garage.

Luckily it is a 97 model boat, and only I think it is worth all of this hassle :reddevil:

The reality of all the locks and cameras in the world won't keep a thief from taking your pride and joy if they want it...It's might make it harder and deter them, but if they want it, it will be gone. Locks and security cameras are for honest people...and peace of mind. Remember to always carry enough insurance for the loss.

just started looking into security for our new acquisition... found the 'trailer keeper' site and it seems to have gotten rave reviews....not a bad price... but, i found the exact same one make and model over on... yup ebay... for somewhat less... like30 bucks less or around there.. here is ebay item number: 300591559948 we'll be ordering one tomorrow...

after wife came home tday with stories from work of how shit gets stolen... trailer and all.. for most part skis vs boats.... i did take it seriously and looked into it. the OTHER think we will do is park the trailer BACKWARDS; a bit of a pain to spin around but worth it, as well as mounting a motion sensing security light along with an ip ir camera in CLEAR view for any asshole with ill thoughts to see. that'll do. any other serious thoughts on security are appreciated.

Strap some containers labeled C4 with a bunch of wires coming out of them to your trailer... What fool would mess with that?? Just an idea... I don't have any big locks or anyting on my trailer. I have a trailer coupler lock holding the ball lock down. If they want it, they can have it and I'll take the check!

that was worth the laugh.... the c4 part that is... getting a motion senser light and a cam right outside our garage in the soffit as well as that ultimate trailer wheel lock i posted before... as well as parking it nose IN, and our car up against it... that should do it! if you cant get to it... you cant get it.. besides we have so many cops who live in our sub div, 2 live on either side of our house both with police cars, one of which is marked k-9 unit... yup. dog lives here too... so, if that doesnt make a big DONT BE STUPID pop up in any idiots mind, woe be it for them... we ALL watch one anothers homes and these cops, their schedules are never the same day to day.... i think we're pretty safe and so is the boat :)
