Traction mat replacement

Quick question. I've looked for the answer but coming up empty. I have a 2001 GTI and want to install new traction mats. The foot wells have what appears to be either a molded in traction grip or a very thin traction substance. Is this able to be scrapped off or just clean it very well and install the new mat over top. Just not sure if the rough surface will be a good underlayment for the new mat. Thanks

Clean it and install right over the top of it.

yip, go right over the top, it won't impact the 3-m from sticking.
