Hello all! Looking for a little bit of help. I have a 1994 SP 587 that lost compression in one of the cylinders and has scoring on each of the pistons so it needs a top end rebuild. Looking specifically for what size the cylinders are to hone them, along with the best places to purchase rebuild kits that include new pistons. I've never done a rebuild so any advice on what to's/what not to do's during the rebuild would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

I do have my eyes on a honing tool (Brush Research Flex Hone) that I've heard good things about, just need to know which size to get. Also have my eyes on a rebuild kit on ebay that has good reviews..

First question - IS IT WORTH IT? The ski is 27 years old. Rebuilding the TOP end on an old bottom end is asking for troubles.

Honing the cylinders, depending on the level of piston scoring probably won't get you where you want to be.

I don't mean to throw water on your fire...but you really need to think this one through.......unless you really just WANT to do it......then DO IT!

Thanks for the reply!
The main reason for the rebuild would be to make it sellable in my area.. I don't really wanna be stuck with this thing forever, and with the condition it's currently in it's very hard to convince someone to buy it. So I figured why not just rebuild and list. There's SOME scoring on the pistons, it's not completely shredded but there's definitely some damage. I was planning to buy new pistons and hone the cylinders. How quickly will rebuilding the top end blow out the bottom end? Would it be on the first rip or would it take some time to blow, if at all? Thanks again!

You need to have the cylinders measured to see if they are in spec.
Chances they are not and need to be bored to the next oversize and larger pistons installed.

There is really no point in just honing and installing new pistons just to try to get a couple hundred more bucks out of it just to have it blow up on the next guy.

$190 for a top end kit WSM. Cylinders you should be able to get bored for $50 each locally. Make sure there are no pieces parts in the bottom end. You can clean it pretty good with the engine still in the ski. Give it a good once over, check the rod bearing for looseness and make sure the crank turns pretty smooth, no bumps. :D

The bottom end should look CLEAN. If there is gray dust everywhere.... you gotta do the whole engine. That is like grinding compound in the bearings. It won't last and is probably done already. Good Luck !!
