To Grease or not to Grease?

So I have the original owners manual for my 95XP 717, It says in the manual to not grease the bearing seal carrier on the drive shaft, on the XP model. Are they perhaps talking about the 95XP 800? does the 800 have the carbon ring? and the 717 has the bearing seal carrier, that should be greased?

If it has the carrier bearing it will have a zerk to be greased. The carbon seal is not greased.

Grease it frequently. I recently blew my hull out in my 95 xp by neglecting to do so over the course of 5 rides

I like the double lip seal arrangement and the bearings for a more positive seal and support but it does take a lot more maintenance which people generally don't do. I think Seadoo made a good move in getting away from that design. I wouldn't keep it on my ski.

I hate to say it but I have never greased that, because of what the manual says, dang! Think I’ve owned that thing for at least 18 yrs, it did sit for some time without any use, but still.
I checked it today it feels ok when I rotate it a little, with it all clamped up. I suppose as long as the seals hold up, the grease should always stay in there?

Being a grease kinda guy I'd try to get some 140 gear oil in there (One ounce would be good) At least put about 10 - 20 pumps of good grease in there. I'd use marine. No EP.

Grease is basically wax impregnated with oil. Once the oil is gone all you have is wax. Your ski will thank you if it the bearings don't let go. Good Luck!!

Thanks, yeah I will get some grease in there for sure. Funny I thought they had some reason, that if you greased it something bad would happen. LoL
Guess you cant always go by the book.

No, if you don't grease it something bad will happen, like ripping out the thru-hull fitting and the ski sinking.
Bearings don't like to last without lubrication, espically ones in a marine environment.
