Guys I am pretty sure I know the answer to my question but I like to make a 100% sure before I drop 2K on some rebuilt engines. I picked up 2 pretty much whole 1996 GTi's w/717's for $400. My boat has 2- 717's in it. So what I want to do is send out the engines from the GTi's to get rebuilt, put them in the boat, and than put the old boat engines in the skis to sell them off. It is a win win in my eyes saves me some cash on the new rebuilds. The engines in my boat still have life left in them. I am in the 150-160 hour range on them but 1 one has leaky inner crank seals, it smokes for like for 10 minutes at dock, and it did once filled the engine enough I had to clear it. I will fix that before I put it in the ski.

So I am pretty sure a 717 are all the same from boat to PCW? Looks the same to me. I know the GTi's from 96 have dual carbs. Look like the only difference between them. I am only going to use the short blocks from the GTi's and pull everything from the boats 717's to put on the new rebuilt GTI's short blocks and do the same to boat short blocks for the GTi's.

Anyone see any issues with this or anyone need a 1996 GTi in the near future?

If it were me, I would sell the skis with original motors in them and make some quick cash. If your boat motors are running good and have good compression numbers, it seems like a waste of time and money to have "rebuilt" motor's installed if your current set up works fine now. That is my opinion.

There is nonissue with your thoughts. That said, it is a TON of work especially since it is your intention to use only the short blocks.

I am fast at stripping the skis down I can have about everything out in like a 3-4 hours. Gas tanks sometimes take a little longer if I have to pump out the gas. I have one with the engine on the floor just need to pull the flywheel and electronics out of it. Putting them back together takes longer. My boat looks to good to have a motor smoking like some 40 year old junker. If I fix one engine I would just do the other one at the same time. They are 18 years old now and I am pretty sure until I got them nothing was ever done to them except make sure it had oil in it. The original owners used it 2 weeks out of the year Memorial Day week and 4th of July week. Than it just sat in the garage the rest of year. They averaged like 12 hours a year on it. I have 6 skis in my pole building right now. I got my new to me 2001 GTi for $325 like I month or so a go by just combining a 92 and 94 GTS to one working ski. The trailer is worth $325 so that was a deal to me it only have 68 hours on it.
