throttle cutting out

1997, GSX. i changed all my fuel lines out. when doing this i cleaned my carb filters as well. now i am having performance issues. when i give it full throttle it takes off, then cuts out, then takes off then cuts out. jumps between 3000 and 6500 rpms. seems like the carbs are starved for fuel. i had to pull my diaphragms to get to my filters and think maybe these may be the problem. i pulled one side out this afternoon and it looks like this, ..............................

there are no tears or holes but it looks a little "worn". IMO. the O-rings appear to be fine. could this be causing fuel pressure issues and be causing a loss of power? thanks for any insight.

It looks like the diaphragms have seen better days. It very well might be your problem. I'd start there and see how it runs after replacement. If they leak air it would cause the problem of lack of fuel...

:agree:

i think i may drop it off at the shop today.

took it to the mechanic today. he says the diaphragms should be ok for now. he found a clogged jet and cleared it. did a little adjusting on the fuel mix and sent me off to test it out. i'm heading to the lake first thing in the morning. hopefully all is well. :hat:

Carbs do need to be real clean as the passages are small. I hope this solves your problem. Let us know how it goes.

please tell me since the carbs are off that he soaked them in carb solution? I would strip those carbs down and depending how strong/old the carb cleaner is ( and when I say carb cleaner I do not mean a spray can, I mean a 5 gallon bucket of high strength carb cleaner) and let them and the jets/all metal parts soak in it for at least a couple of hours, I have had to soak some overnight, then hot water will clean them off, you will be suprised the crap that comes off them after a soak in that stuff.

all is well. topped out at 63 MPH. ran it a couple hours at top speed with no issues. looks like i'm set for the summer. got my first sunburn of the year as well. :hurray:

when i was changing the fuel lines i found a lot of small pieces of black rubber throughout the fuel system. at the time the only thing black rubber that could have gotten in there is the rubber from the filler neck, that i can see. i don't know how it got past the water separator and the filters but it made it all the way up into the carb. i found it in the carb filters and the mechanic actually found a piece lodged in one of the jets.

it runs like a rocket now. it only has 80 hours on it and it's spotless clean so i knew it couldn't be anything major. got it out of the shop for a mere 150 dollars. he adjusted the fuel mix as well so it's running waaaay smoother.
