I'm in the planing stages of adding some lights to my boat and i already have the LED Eagle eye lights i will be adding like the ones bellow.
eagle eye LED.jpg

As you can see the light is about 1.3 inches long how thick is the transom?
I'm planing on installing 2 there but want to make sure before i go on drilling holes.Better safe than at the bottom of the lake latter

I did some searching before posting but the post i found were a different kind of lights that only needed a small hole for the cables as the lights were surface mount. Also no luck searching for hull thickness.

I really don't know, I would guess about 1", you may need to pull one of the pumps and measure the thickness. I takes about 15-20 mins. to pull a pump.

Every time i take something out to check something else i end up having to replace what i took out and what i was going to replace lol
I will wait till i need to actually replace something on the transom, that will be in the next month because i need to replace the steering cable so i will check it there.

Any idea what those threads are? Just an idea if you need slightly additional reach, maybe you could use an aluminum or stainless nutsert from the inside?

Otherwise I bet you could just pot the light in polyurethane sealant adhesive and completely forget about using a nut (or ever removing the light absent using a helical chisel).

Were will i find these marvelous things? Ive seen them before in other aplications but i have never seen them in homedepot or such.

Nutserts are available in metric and SAE, depending on the thread you need you might find them on ebay under "nutsert" or Harbor Freight also has a few of the sizes on the shelf.

I've used these before for mounting exterior hardware in locations where a regular hex nut would present a snag hazard on the inside surface.

BTW, I don't think you need the crimping tool, just the appropriately sized thread. Then for assembly if you need to make if super tight and since you have a wire coming through the annular you can cut a slot in the head for a flat blade screwdriver. If no wire was involved, you could use a reamer or easyout to tighten the nutsert and optionally epoxy to lock it into place. ONLY if you never expect to remove it though!!!

Finger tight might be good enough for you, along with a dab of sealer on the exterior?
