Read in the new Boat US magazine that the coast guard is thinking about making all passengers on a boat under 18ft wear a life jacket full time while under way.

It will be so very easy to statistically support this that I would imagine there will be some sort of federal funding behind it. As a result,,, it would not shock me for this to be heavily supported.

I was in the CG for 23 years. From experience I can tell you the survival rate from wearing a PFD is substantial.

That said, I hear you and do agree it would not be an enjoyable thing to wear one all day long when you are trying to enjoy the day..

I do agree that PFDs do save lives. I just don't Agee on using boat length to validate this idea. Horsepower should be used instead. Seems like people who drown are very drunk or just can't swim and fall out of small fishing boats here in Florida.
Surprisingly , most are chalked up to not ever learning to swim.
Go figure.

I'm not familiar with the statistics of survival rate with and without a PFD. Coastiejoe, would you say that it's an equal ratio for the survival rate of those wearing PFDs where incidents occurs inshore vs off shore?

Sorry if that is worded in a confusing manner....my point is that perhaps modify this law so it affects only <18ft boats who are off shore as opposed to on lakes and inter coastal water ways (or less than say a mile from shore).

Off-shore survival rate is dramatically less when not wearing the RIGHT type of protection. Meaning, if you are in cold weather you need a dry suit with thermal or a gumby suit.

As noted above, most of the water deaths are from people falling in and simply not coming back up or they do not know how to swim.

In my opinion, most lake or in-shore accidents are witnessed by some other boater and most are rescued as a result.

I do think the law could be manipulated so that it would be mostly benefiting the ones where a PFD is more critical, such as ocean and off-shore locations. The horse power thing could come back to haunt us PWC users as few boats have the HP we do. My RXP has 255hp. Most cars don't have that.. LOL
