Hi all, I'm new so go easy. I have a question about starting a ski without a programmed key. I'm interested in finding an older ski and reviving it. I know how to check compression. But I want to know if it's possible to check the spark or see if it will start with a shot of starting fluid or premix shot into carbs. That way I know if the ski is worth buying and I can always get a key at a dealership. So is it possible to jump the starting solenoid in the relay box (like the 99 GSX Ltd has). I'd really like to get a 96 XP or 97-99 SPX as well as a GSX Ltd.

You can't test for spark or running without a good DESS key.

You can jump the solenoid to test compression but that is it.

Thanks so much for the speedy reply. I guess I'll just have to take a chance if the key is lost or missing. How often do these skis have mag or mpem(?) Problems resulting in no spark? Back when I owned them I never had any issues, but they're a lot older skis now, and I'm curious.

Hard to say. Depends if it has been jump started, used, abused.
A non running ski is a gamble. I wouldn't pay more that $500 even if it is in good condition and good compression.

Thanks again, that's kind of the range I was looking at. Using the great post on this forum, I just rebuilt the carbs on my cousin's 99 GSX Ltd, and it runs awesome now. It got me wanting one from my earlier days when I had them. Those light fast skis were a blast!!!

One other question, should you not ever jump start these skis? Just not with a car? What about with a battery charger or like with a jump pack or is that not advised either?? Sorry again my overall knowledge is limited, just pretty mechanically inclined.

Never jump with a running car, jump pack or boosting charger.

Only safe way is with a car battery but the car can't be running. THe expensive MPEM computers do not like power spikes.
