Temper mental boat issues

I've been having this ongoing issue where the boat will not plane out on the water. At full throttle the nose comes up, and it chugs along without ever powering up. Dr. Honda asked me this before, and I finally have an answer. It maxes out at 3k RPM's when the issue is observed. Here's the twist. Today it will not run right, tomorrow it might run just fine and it will run 6k RPMs without problem all day. When the problem occurs, it starts right up, but doesn't want to idle long before shutting itself off. Even when chugging at 3k RPM's there seems to be a lot of smoke. Yesterday on the water I had somewhat of a break thru from a diagnosis stand point. I spent the first 30 min running it maxed out at 3k rpms. Yesterday was the first time I decided to push the boat to see if I could get it to work right. I usually quickly give up and take it home fearing I'll damage it running it in this condition. So I'm chugging along and all of the sudden I feel it start to jerk, like it wants to power up. 3-4 jerks later, suddenly it kicks in and planes out. I spent the next 3 hours skiing, tubing, starting stopping, turning ignition off, on, no problems. I docked for about an hour to eat, then boom, back to no power again. This time it only lasted for a minute or two, then several jerks, planed out. What in the world would cause this??? Ok before you answer that, here is a list of what's already been done:

Throttle guardian disconnected
New spark plugs
compression test all in spec to the manual
new fuel lines from the tank, to the pulse, to the fuel pump, filter (everywhere)
fuel pressure test 36 psi (never tested when problem exists, always seems to run right when I rent the tester)
Rhinda Tech indicates CPU and all other electronics working correctly
TPS sensor tested within spec
Trigger assembly tested and within spec
Spark found on all 6 cylinders
Replace air temp sensor
Replace engine temp sensor
wear ring checked in good condition
intake grate free from debris, nothing on rod
Stator drained/replaced (no metal shavings or evidence, appeared clean)
Pump drained/replaced (same)
Replaced exhaust hoses

Stumped

I would lean in the direction of a connection issue over a component issue. Next time it happens wiggle wire harness and tap on item with a screwdriver handle.

Yep... what he said.

Also... just because some thing checks out... doesn't mean it's always working.

With your description... I'm going to say... you aren't firing on all cyl's. SO... I would be looking at CDI's, or the trigger... or the rev-limiter. AND... unfortunately... you need to check it when the problem comes up.

Thanks for the replies. I'll clean all the connections up on it. Do you think it could fire sometimes but not others? When the boat planes out and is able to reach max speed and rpms does that mean it its firing and then failing? Why would that happen?

That's why it's intermittent When the boat planes out and is able to reach max speed and rpms does that mean it its firing and then failing? Yes Why would that happen? Something is broke/lose/warn out

OK... I didn't want to make that seem like it was basic... but it takes a little investigation to figure things out. Like I said before... just because something checks one time, doesn't mean it's working all the time.

To figure out this problem, you will need to go out with tools... and when the problem comes up... start checking. I would also recommend getting several in-line spark checkers so when the issue comes up... you can just look to see if all the plugs are firing.

If we can eliminate spark... then we have to look at the injectors. You could have a lose connection there... or a couple that are plugged/stuck.

I've seen the in line spark testers. Can I run the boat like normal if I have 6 of them on the boat? I had the injectors out at the beginning of the season. There was no build up on either side and all appeared in good shape. I wasn't able to do an actual test to make sure they all spray though. As spastic as its been I'd be afraid to see a good spray during test just to put it back together and have it act up again on me.

Ok. Ignore my last comment. I was just waking up and hadn't had coffee yet. Now that I'm with it, I started by cleaning up all the connections. While doing so, I tested the resistance on the trigger. The manual says 1100-1400 on brown/yellow white/red and blue purple. I'm within spec on all except brown yellow. I can't get any reading on brown to yellow at all. Does this mean the trigger is bad? Or going bad. Could it be possible that it works at times and quits at others. Grasping as straws here because I've already dumped too much money into trial and error parts. Any help is greatly appreciated.

OK... reading your posts... yep... my finger is pointing at the trigger. Plug number 3 and 6 use the same "Trigger" in the unit. So... I think we found the smoking gun.

FYI... it's basically a magnetic switch, so it's very easy for it to go intermittent.

Replaced the trigger and now firing on all 6 cyls. Looks like that was the culprit. Looking back at a post from March or April I saw someone had suggested that but I tested it and rules it out. Man that could've saved me a bunch of money. But on the upside I've learned a fair amount. Not water tested yet but I'm pretty confident that I won this time. Thanks everyone for all the help!
