Guys-just went thru this so I'll post while its fresh on my mind
Symptom: Starter button is pressed and you only hear a CLICK CLICK
1st thing to try:
- pop the Startboard rear seat , remove the pan under it with the 2-straight slot screws
- there is a 15 amp fuse on the Selonoid hanging off on a 6 inch lead-pull the cap , pull the fuse and check that the contacts arent corroded-if so scratch them clean-this may get you going
2nd thing to try:
Jump the two big terminals on the Solenoid with plyers or wrench(after pulling the insulation red boots back)- if the starter turns over-then you've got either a bad solenoid or bad connection-replace and or clean them
In my case when I jumped the Solenoid-the tips of my needle nose plyers lit up like an arc welder and turned bright Red!
this means either your starter is toast or your engine is preventing the starter from rotating,.
I pulled the plugs on that engine next to ensure there wasnt any hydro lock keeping the engine from turning-still arc sparked!
PULLING THE STARTER
1) pull up both back seats
2) take out both underseat pans (2 screws each)
3) disconnect the posative cable from the battery
4) Get a Mirror and lay on your stomach with your left arm in the Starbord access hole and your right arm thru the Port access hole(where the pans were)
5) with a 5mm Inverted Torx socket take out the two rear bolts that hold the starter to the engine block
6) Pull and twist the starter torwards you-it has Orings up front so it will be snug
7) once out, disconnect the ground wire from the rear of its casting (10mm hex head bolt)
8) disconnect the Posative cable from the side lug
Starter is now free and out-you can check the unit by connecting a battery charger to the terminals-if it spins up then you got locked engine problems-grab a beer and cry
-If it doesnt spin up then you need a new starter-grab a beer and smile
From my research, it seems that aftermarket starters are Bad Hockey, so do it once and get an OEM unit from this sites store.
Installation is the same-check your new starter with a battery charger as above to ensure youve gotten a good unit
Youll need to pull the gear from your old unit and its held on with a Circlip, remove the clip with the correct plyers or use a small thin screwdriver and pull it rearward while lifting the ring end with your finger
-Grease the Orings
-use Antisieze on all electrical connections
-Use Blue locktite on the 5mm rear mtg screws to the block
Its a Tight fit with your arms and Mirror and tools working backasward but its very doable
Keep in mind the hull is Fiberglass and WILL tear your arms up and youll itch like an attic installation contractor
but thats it-sorry no pics-my phone doesnt cooperate when alot of profanity is flying
