I have seen a few of the post's that say not to use TCW-3 oil. What could be the potential problems if using TCW-3? When I purchased my 97 GTI, TCW-3 is what the previous owner had been using. Will it make much of a difference now if I change the type of oil I use on an 11 year old engine.

How long did the old owner use that oil. The seadoo engines do not use any other type oil. This is the specs for the correct oil;

Use High quality low ASH API TC Injector oil.
Do Not use NMMA TC-W, TC-W2 or TC-W3 outboard motor oils or other ash less type 2 cycle oil. Avoid mixing different brands of API TC oil as resulting chemical reaction will cause severe engine damage. Never mix Mineral or Synthetics oil together.

I beleive your model the 1997 GTI has a 717 engine, that requires Mineral oil

This is direct from the seadoo manuals.

Not sure

I am not sure how long he used the oil but I am assuming that it was for quite some time. More than a couple of years if I had to guess. He purposely showed me the oil that he had been using when I bought it because he had about 1/2 a gallon left.

I guess I will try and get with the Seadoo people and see what they have to say.

Thanks

I know there is other information on the forum about the different oil and what happens. I haven't been able to get my hands on it with over 14,000 post...I will find it for you so then you can decide what to do. I think that if it has been good for this long, personally I wouldn't change either...(that's just my opinion)

I might be way off here, but the older models can run TCW-3, but from like 99 and up, can't...

NO, I own a 1997 Challenger...
this is out of the seadoo manual...like 26 of them;

Use High quality low ASH API TC Injector oil.
Do Not use NMMA TC-W, TC-W2 or TC-W3 outboard motor oils or other ash less type 2 cycle oil. Avoid mixing different brands of API TC oil as resulting chemical reaction will cause severe engine damage. Never mix Mineral or synthetics oil together.
