Supercharger rebuild

I've decided to be brave and rebuild my own supercharger. Is there anything I need to worry about now that I'm doing it myself? It looks pretty straight forward. Found the rebuild kit in Sarasota for $250

I found a tool kit for $78.95, much better than BRP price of around $200. :ack:

What do you guys use for the super lube grease (not the Kluber Isoflex NB 52)?? I've seen grease before, but never purchased it. The rebuild says you need both, and I've already ordered the Isoflex for the needle bearings and washers.

Well, she's out of the boat. Can anyone tell if the washers are ceramic or not???

Is it supposed to spin so easily?? Plus, the gear spins on it's own?? Third, is the gear movement laterally normal??



 
Well, after searching all over the net and the other PWC sites, it seems I am missing the outer washer, which is why I have the play in the gear. All needle bearings seem to be accounted for, there is no damage to the gear nor the needle bearings, plus the impeller is not off center nor chewing up the housing. I wish I had a better camera, and I wish someone with repair experience would make a post in this thread (hint, hint).

So, what is my next step?? I think I'll be talking to my dealer I bought it from, and checking into returning it, or getting money back for needed repairs. I had sea trialed it, and it seemed to have been running fine. We never did WOT it, and I only ran it for like 5 minutes. We ran it to about 45 mph, but I had no idea what the boost should of felt like.

I try to help when I can, but Ive never cracked one of the SeaDoo superchargers. You may want to send Chester a PM. I think he is the only full time "pro" watercraft mechanic on the board.

Anyway... I would try to find where that washer went. if it broke, and dropped into the engine... it could mess things up.

At this point... the type of washers on SC is irrelevant. Replace them with the Riva tool steel washers. They don't shatter when they go bad, and that can save your engine.
 
Since one of those ceramic washers is missing, you are going to have to take the engine apart to clean out the 2 oil pumps and inspect for damage. Those ceramic pieces will damage the oil pumps if left in.

Well, I called a local jet ski shop who explained the same thing Chester. Gotta pull the engine, remove and inspect the 2 oil pumps, clean the screens, clean the bottom of the block, check the timing chain. Thats about 8 hours/ $600. If the oil pumps gotta be machined, that could be another $400. He didn't even want to get into if the timing chain needed changing.

I called my dealer, he needs to talk to his partner about them doing some of the work to get the cost down.

What was your engine doing that caused the need to rebuild the SC? From tearing it down you can see the washer problems, but what were the symptoms that you were experiencing? rough idle? poor acceleration? wont start? grinding from the engine?
 
I bought it and was rebuilding the SC before putting it in the water. I've only been doing the servicing since I bought it, too many people here told me not to risk taking it out on the water with 131 hours and not knowing if the rebuild was done. Well, it wasn't. When I water tested it, I didn't go much over 40, and never went over 2/3 throttle. It seemed to run fine, but I've never been on a jet ski or high powered jet boat. If I would of tried full throttle, maybe I would of felt it bogging down. :(

what were your max rpms and how long did you ride it like this??? IMO your in deep anyways and the motor has 130+ hrs. id split the case and replace the chain and inspect the bearing and replace if worn but at least change the timing chain.
 
I think we were around the 6k RPM range, but only ran it like 2 mins, always backed off on the turns to around 4k RPM. The dealer is pulling the block apart to inspect and clean up. I warned them to check both oil pumps, the timing chain, and to clean the bottom of the block. They already told me they could get a completely overhauled engine from SBT for around $2G if necessary, on them.

I received my SC rebuild kit, the tool kit, and the Loctite 243 today. Still waiting for my Kluber grease, and gotta find out what happened to my flange sealant RTV silicone to seal up the SC.

And I still need to know what you guys use for the "super grease" needed in the rebuild of the SC..........

My supercharger is rebuilt and my oil pumps are off at the machine shop. Can't wait to get her back and get out on the water!!!

It seems they're having a hard time getting the right parts for my oil pumps. My dealer sent the pumps to a jet ski repair shop because they wouldn't tell him where to get them machined. They had originally called SBT (since it's right here), and were told they didn't have the parts available (they have a core swap program). So they sent it out to these other guys, and a 2007 oil pump got sent back for 1 of them, and it allegedly doesn't match up. The 2nd shop probably sent it to SBT, because it's the same price that SBT charges. Here's some pics of the torn apart powertrain.

The impeller is chewed up on the inside edges of the blades, but the outer edges near the wear ring are in perfect shape. Do I need to worry about a new impeller??

Hopefully I should be getting my oil pumps back soon, so she can be put back together and I can get out on the water.
 
Well, she's back together and running. But now a NEW problem. There is a pinhole leak at the bottom of the exhaust manifold where it connects to the exhaust pipe. Water just keeps dumping in the engine compartment. I have a sinking feeling about this dilemna!?!? :mad:

Any thoughts on the new situation??? :confused:

bad gasket possibly?
 
Got my boat back today. Ended up getting a new-to me exhaust manifold too. So, close to $2000 of work on the dealer tab, and I have my boat back. Now to find time to get it in the water....but I still need anchors, lines, and a good life vest, along with flares and a fire extinguisher. May be a little time yet before I get to the fun part. :(

I also wanna get a depth/fish finder and Hydro Turf, but can pick up those later.
