Hey everyone,
Well I finally picked up my two new ski's of course they came with their problems. The previous owner said that sugar had been poured in their tanks. I checked the plugs, which looked good, I checked the filter it was a lil dirty on both. Next I took the rave caps off and pulled them out I have attached some pics to see if this looks normal to anyone. They had a soft material on the edges. Sugar? This is the first time I have tore into a possible sugar'd machine and jet ski as well. Both were assumed to be sugar'd.
Oh also the only reason I am doing this is because I got them at a great price . . . FREE :) both are 98's 951cc ones a GTX and the other is a XP.
Thanks so much for the help!

If anyone has any more questions that would help me out let me know

cant beat that price....i'd rip thru and rebuild the carbs, also replace the fuel lines and filter on bottom of baffle, also clean the tank. If compression good, then little love to ski's, and they'll be good to go...

What do you think about the sugar though? I heard if it gets through the carb it will actually scratch the inside of the walls of the cylinders. I guess ill find that out when I do a compression test. Thing that bugs me is the crap that is on the rave slide (correct name?) in the pics is that usual or usually clean and just carboned? I don’t really know how describe it but it’s not tough to smash between the fingers.

Sounds like you got a really "sweet deal"!

He heh he!

anyway, I think if they got enough sugar into it to hurt it, that they would stop up the carbs, before much damage was done.

Still, I'd put penetrating oil (that says diesel, or kerosene, down the spark plug holes), and let her soak overnight. Then, crank it WITHOUT plugs, (don't forget to place the spark plug wires on the grounding rack), and spew out the diesel, before you try to run it.

Like others have said, I'd rework the fuel system, before trying to run it. This means new lines, clean the filters, and carbs.

I'll bet you get it going.

Hey thanks for the help guys! Ya I plan on replacing all the lines and clean everything thoroughly after all the posts I have read about how the lines screw everything up. I just thought that if I could find out if there was actual sugar put in the tanks I would go ahead and pull the head to check the walls for damage. I guess it would make since that the carb filters would clog before to much sugar got into the actual piston.

Progress:
So far I sprayed the insides of the cylinders with penetrating oil last night, soaked them pretty good. Picked up a new battery as well. So tonight ill pull the carbs off and check compression.
Does the exhaust have to come off prior to carb removal or does it just make it easier?
Thanks for the help!
I’m really happy with these so far! Electronics all work beeps and VTS works on the XP!

once the carbs and exhaust are off there is not much left but 4 bolts and gravity holding the motors into the hulls. i would remove the motors and pull the jugs and see what the pistons look like and get the crankcase and RV faces really clean. sugar burns. burns nasty and attaches itself to anything. will wreck the pistons and cyl walls. now that motors are out, pull the gas tanks and oil tanks and get them all the way empty of everything. sugar is vandalism. an attempt to destroy the engine. not a little prank.

sugar........

Sugar is solubale in liquid. There is no way it can scratch anything. Once someone sugars your gas, it sets in play, gumming. It gums up everything, clogging internall ports etc....
Look at the bottom of my signature page, you'll see a link for the inside parts of a 787. I know you have the 951, but the engine design is the same, just different size pistons and stroke.
Those raves look horrible. They both need to be cleaned. In that thread I mentioned, there are pointers in how to clean them. The mag RAVE is harder to get to becaue of the tuned pipe. You have to remove the black plastic cap cover and unscrew that plastic black bolt in the center. That will seperate the guilletine from the bellows. Don't worry, it won't fall into the engine.
Your going to have to clean your fuel system from beginning to end. You don't mention whether you got the GTX limited or the RFI model. If it's the carbed model, tear your carbs apart, careful with the gaskets, they are reusable, then put them back together and see what happens......
