I have a stupid ? on a 95 speedster. I see in the engine compartment there is styrofoam blocks lined with type of foam on the sides toward the engines. My dumb ? Is, what is this for? and can I remove it?

Ok thank you. I was thinking it was for somthing along those lines. For some reason anytime I get water back in the engine compartment, the left side foam sits right down on the bottom of the full and soaks up all the water and seams to be always wet. Any idea how to keep this from happening?

Im not really sure. The starboard side seems to sit up higher and off the bottom of the hull. The port side sits down on the full in a crevis that holds water than the foam soaks up the water.

It sounds like it came unglued. You can get styrofoam adhesive at lowes or depot. If it's floating on water then it's def out of place. Simply reglue it.

Isn't it styrofoam like a cooler? Shouldn't soak up water if that's the stuff you're talking about. It should float.

yes it is styrofoam, but on the outer sides that faces the motors both have like a heat resistant foam wich soaks up water.

Doesn't sound like much of a floatation device.... I'll take a look at mine. Maybe snap a picture and I'll tell you if it's in the wrong place... Or if I get out to the boat in the next little bit and take the cover off, I'll attatch a picture of mine.

I think you are talking about the dark gray "egg carton" like foam. That's sound dampening foam. The styrofoam should be white. T

yep dwhee87 thats what im talking about. On mine both sides of engine compartment have it. white styrofoam and then a thin layer of the sound dapening stuff on the outer side of the styrofoam that faces the engines. Are they supose to sit up off the bottom of the hull so the egg carton foam doesnt soak up water??

I dont, but I do wash my boat and hull out alot. I just got done taking purple power to the engine bay and cleaned it all up.

Well, a picture ISN'T worth a thousand words in this case.. can't see anything in the picture! The egg crate is glued to the styrofoam and does extend far enough down that it sits in water that could be in the little pocket in the hull. You might want to trim the lower edge of the egg crate but I wouldn't remove it completely. These engines are noisey so any and all foam is there for noise reduction. Not really sure what it does on the sides like that but I'm sure it has a purpose. Well, if you want to remove the egg crate I guess it's up to you but leave the styrofoam. Does that answer your question?

yep sure does, thank you. I take it you looked at your sink and yours in the same way? I think what I might do is see if I can actually just mount the styrofoam on the sidewall so its not just sitting on the bottom of the hull. It really doesnt hurt anything the way it is, I just dont like the idea of that egg crate foam beeing wet all the time. lol.

Yeah Chad. I took a couple of pictures too but they show nothing. My styrofoam is mounted solid so it sounds like your's came loose? Can't move it but it still seems to rest on the bottom.

See???

Just fyi... the oil gauge has been removed from the system... Lines are cut and sealed off. Just in case someone was wondering.. No clue why. I will probably reconnect them at some point this winter while I'm working on it.

lol thanks for the pics, but you are right, cant really see them. I also took pics and came up with the same thing lol. I was going to say it looks like your out of oil. lol Thanks for all your help.

No problem. Glad I could help. Let me know what you end up doing. Seems like I've always got a little water in there... not much but it seems to always be in the little pocket where the foam sits so I know what you are talking about.

I've never seen one of those, is it fill level, as in it just fills with oil to show you how much is in the tank? My 96 doesn't have one obviously. :) I would like to put one in my boat though!

Just to add something constructive, and not threadjack, water is probably not going to hurt that foam, it spends its whole life in the dark, and there is enough of it to wick away any moisture that it accumulates. As long as you tilt the tongue up high enough for the water to actually get to the drains, it will stay nice and dry. I usually dump a cup of bleach in the floor storage after every outing to kill off any river mold or bacteria.

Another thing you can do to promote drying, is remove your storage bin, and throw a buoy under the engine cover to stop it from shutting. If you don't have anywhere to put the bin, you can set it on top of the round rubber stops instead of under them when you put it in. That will leave a gap all around bin for water to evap from. The factory vents work well under way, but the tubes go all the way to the floor. This doesn't allow for good ventilation when the engine is not running, or the blower is off.

hmm, i can tell that you are right handed, took the picture in your parent's basement and your fuel tank is half empty.

Little twin brother Jake,

Nope... Left handed.. haven't lived at home for over 30 years and trailer houses don't have basements.... Oh yeah, my fuel tank is half FULL and my oil tank is too!

Ernest,

The oil gauge came stock on the 95 Speedster but not on the Sportster for some reason. Prolly cuz it sucks so much gas and oil they want to make sure you watch it closely!!! It would be very easy to hook back up. Not sure why it was unhooked in the first place. It is just a level indicator so it is at the same level as the tank. Just a tube ran from the bottom to the top of the tank and placed where you can see it. Just open the hatch and it's right there instead of having to pull up the tray. I would be very easy to run one outside your engine compartment about anywhere it would be at the same level as the oil tank. Don't forget pictures if you decide to do this so others can see.
