Hello everyone! My name is Jim and I have owned my 1995 SPX since new. My problem is I let it sit for about 5 years and now I have a ton of oil in the spark plug chambers. It turns over fine and was running great the last time I used it. I'm not a marine mechanic by any means and hoping that due to my own stupid fault that I haven't destroyed the motor and need a new one. Anyone have any ideas and if so how much (ballpark) would ya think I would be looking at to fix it or have it fixed. Thanks for any help!

hello jim and welcome to the forum!!! I dont think that yoiu have any problem here at all as long as the engine is not locked up you can pull out the spark plugs and try to start the engine with the plugs out and all the oil will spray out of the cylinders for ya. it will make a mess so you can put a rag over the cylinders to catch it. do this is about 5 to 10 second bursts so you dont burn your starter up ok. It will take a while but it will work trust me i had the same problem with mine.
Yep, the rotary valve will leak oil into the cylinders over time while it sits. Pull the plugs, put rags over the holes and crank till it comes out. Then throw in some new plugs and enjoy the smoke show. It might take a few tries, but it will come out and burn off.
Thanks for the welcome! It sprays oil all over when I crank it. What causes it to do that? I'm wondering if I should just go to mix? So your saying to just kind of flush out all the oil by starting it several times? Do you think all the oil got in there from sitting?
Yep, you should be good to go after that. It happens a lot.

Ok I will take some pics. I know I took off the carbs and the exhaust manifold as well, and the white front plate that sits in the front of the motor. Worst part is I know I'm gonna need at the very least some hardware cause I moved about a year ago (divorce) and I'm sure some of the bits and pieces are still there. Hopefully with some help I can put it back together again cause I would love to get out on the water again.
Hi everyone hope you don't mind me jumping in. I have a 1994 SPX I just got running again and have the same problem with oil getting in the cylinders is it possible to change the rotor valve shaft seal without taking the crankcase apart ? Mine is leaking into cylinders in just 1 Day has anyone tried it ?

Well....... it could be the crank seals if its leaking that much. As for your question about replacing the rotary valve seal yes you need to split the case to do it and while you are at it you might as well replace the crank seals. You cant replace them yourself but there is a company that you can ship it to to get it done. Its well worth it when you already have it apart and will eliminate the possibility of the seals being bad
If it fills in 1 day, its not the rotary valve. Your crank seals are shot. Start planning on a rebuild.
