I have a 97 gtx and after completely cleaning the carbs and rave valves the thing just isnt running right. it will take off and at full throttle be about 4800 rpm but only go like 25 mph. once in awhile if i play with throttle i can get it to plane out and run like 50 mph. once i get it up and going as long as i stay on full throttle it runs great. meaning that if i spin a cookie and the machine comes to a stop if i never let off it will pick up and keep going. but if i let off throttle and try and get back on it stays at like 25 mph again until it eventually picks up again. any ideas? it has me real confused.

i'd be more concerned of only get'n 4800rpm. did you replace the spring in the n/s assy? is the o-ring in the inline filter?

What made you clean the carbs and rave's? just normal maint or where there problems before?

It's not a jet pump problem.
Try disconnecting the red wire at the rectifier/voltage regulator & re-test. It's a common problem. The weird thing is, in the last week, I had to replace the rectifier on a 96 GTX and a 97 GTX.

Where is voltage regulator located? And how do you retest?

The voltage regulator is in the gray electrical box.
You re-test by putting the Sea-Doo in the water and going full throttle to see if you can get your full RPM's.

Ok lastly do I test with wire unhooked? Or do I just unhook and rehook?

sorry to be a pain but i cant seem to locate the grey electrical box or the rectifier. Any tips on where to find it or maybe a pic?

I had the exact same problem on my 97 GSX. Replace the wear ring and refurbed the Impellar, changed the pump oil, put it in the water and she ran like at BAT OUT OF HELL...................... Then my starter fell off:ack:

I had no choice but to start with the cheapest and easiest fix which happened to be the wear ring and it worked for me. There're many possible causes.

Is wear ring something that I can do myself?

The wear ring will not be your problem, it is a good idea to check it and replace it if it is bad, however it will not cause the problem you have. It would rev up fine but just would not go anywhere, and would not do fine in a spin even if you held the throttle...............the wear ring is not causing your problems

A cheap place to start. Just sayin it helped mine as I just bought it this year and have no idea of previous maint. Eventually I will go through the entire ski.

Maybe for you, I am telling them that the wear ring is not their problem.....a wear ring problem would not cause the issues they are having.

He has the exact opposite problem as you. His engine will not rev up. A worn wear ring will cause the engine to over rev.

Remove the storage bucket under the hood and the box is right there. It's in the box.

so im going to test the rectifier thursday. If this is the problem, ant ideas about what a replacement costs. Also where would i get one? i have no local dealer.

ok tested rectifier and had good results. unplugged the red wire and took it to water, consistantly was able to reach high rpms this time. problem still is that it doesnt want to go out of the hole very quickly. if i go full throttle from a stand still it takes off pretty and takes a good 5 sec to plane out and hit normal rpms.
