Stereo Mount question

My boat is currently 2k miles away from me at the moment, so I'm going all off memory, but hoping to know how to solve this problem by the time I have the boat in hand again. So... I bought a 98 Sportster a few years back. It had a stereo installed and worked great. Last fall, I took the boat out in some rough water (last time for the season) and ended up cracking (breaking?) the stereo partially off the mounts. Turns out it did not have support holding up the back part of the stereo (it will when I repair it!), so after hitting some steady rough waves, the plastic cracked. Now it has one of those closeable covers that is supposed to protect it from water. But Im not sure if those covers just seal to the boat using caulking? Or if the stereo is mounted to the cover, which in turn is mounted to the boat. So, does anyone have any ideas what actually broke? Is it the stereo itself? Or the stereo mount? Is it replaceable or do I need a new stereo? Tough to explain, wish I had pics! But hopefully you guys can understand my explanation..I tried searching, but couldn't turn up any good pics.
Maybe some pics of the stereo mounts that others have installed would help me out.
Thanks guys!

EDIT: Maybe this post would be better in the Modify section? If so..moderators fell free to move!

Finally got my boat in hand. Boy did I miss that thing! Anyways, I got a few pictured for you guys to hopefully show you what I was trying to describe. Upon further investigation it appears that it is the stereo cover (which the stereo mounts to) that is broken, and not the stereo itself. How do these two usually attach to each other?

EDIT: The internet here at the hotel where I'm staying is being lame. I'm having trouble uploading the pics I took. If anyone would so kind as to post them up for my it would be much appreciated. Send me a message with your email. There are 3 pics. Thank you!

Most of the weather proof covers just bolt onto the fiberglass and the radio sits in it.
