Stepping Back

Guys,

I'm going to step back from this forum a little. This is nothing against anyone in particular, but I honestly feel that this forum is going in the wrong direction. Serious threads have been hijacked and not enough good advice is being given, and there is too much drivel, not enough information, not enough questions being answered.

I have been guilty of this myself, but I also feel that there is a time and place. So I'll check the forum a couple of times a day to see if I can be of help. I'm going to let the new guys take over, I'll just sit back and see how it goes.

Your insight/knowledge will be missed.
I had to goggle drivel :)
But I disagree on the not enough good advice being given.
If it wasn't for this site and help with my dumb q's I wouldn't have gotten as far as I have with the boat and two dead ski's I'm bring back to life.
There are some highjacking and drivel going on but I don't think its intentionally done. One comment opens opinions to other comments which side track OP thread but they always/usually get answers.....

Its the slow season anyways.....

Hi Ocod,

I really appreciate the support, and I know that information exists, but to be honest I think a lot of guys give up trying to dig the information out of all the B.S., take a look at what has happened to the winterize thread, this is a good example.

I joke around a lot myself and I also like to have fun, but I just think things have gotten out of hand. It's a little disheartening when I see a new post on a thread and have to sort through 10 or 15 posts to get to an honest question. To be honest I don't have the time or patience.

I'm not backing out entirely, I just plan on checking the posts in the morning and evening, I just don't have the time anymore.

Lou

One more comment, I correspond with friends on this forum also, that's what PM's are for, also anyone can start an new thread in the off topic section.

Your good advice will be highly missed.
Also will be your humor in the "ask Jake & Lou" thread, it's funny how you type a "Southern accent"...BTW, there has not been any replies to in 5 days.
Keep up the work on your skis and report back in when you deem necessary...or when we need your help (always).
Sea ya soon seadoolou! ! !

SDB,

I'll be checking in, I've learned a lot from Dr Honda, one of the things he does is make a comment or a correction, when he can help, I plan on doing the same thing. I've just been spending too much time on this forum. So a couple of times a day should do it. None of the questions on this forum are a matter of life or death, that can't wait a few hours.

But my ski doesn't work. Why won't it start :)
See Ya around Lou.

Lou,
I made the exact same decision to step back a couple days ago but my absence will not be any where near the impact as yours. As I know you do, I would only give technical advice If I was 90% sure it was correct and I knew you or Doc would have my back and correct me if I was wrong. I'm absolutely guilty of joking on threads, but I think we both had the general rule of trying to make sure the original post was properly answered before doing so. If some want to consider that as contributing to the drivel then so be it. I'm sure those same people will be pleased by my absence.

The quantity of bad and useless technical advice being given by some has increased significantly over the past several months. Personally I see that as being a far more egregious problem the forum faces in maintaining its credibility.

I agree. There needs to be less joking in the "Real" sections. If the original poster is making jokes... that's one thing... but when others come in and are adding "Fluff" to a thread... then that's an issue. Since I have been absent over the last month or so... I have noticed that it's getting a little "Off subject" in most of the regular threads.

One thing... I still check in at least once a day... and I skim thew threads looking for stuff with no responses. SO... if guys are joking in threads... and that thread has 5 or 6 posts... I have no way of knowing if a real answer has been given.

I really think that all joking should be kept in the off topic section... and nothing should bleed over into the real sections. (not even a crack about sis)

I hate forums where the mods rule with an iron fist, and delete posts at will... but when the best seadoo forum changes from being known as the "Best place to get info" to "those guys are never serious"... then it's time to change. Especially when one of the most active people on the board is leaving because of issues.

Anyway... winter is coming, and the board will drop down to a few posts a day. Hopfully, we can get back to biz in the spring.

*****EDIT****

Lou... you have been a huge help around here... and a board is only as good as it's members. If you want to see a change... then lead by example. No more joking, and correct people when they get off subject. Even if you aren't a MOD... people still listen to the old guys.

It's not just the joking, lord knows I'm guilty of that also, I feel there's a lot of misinformation being given. I'm not going to point anyone out but I feel that some guys on this forum answer questions, right or wrong, just for the sake of answering. I feel that if you don't have anything to contribute or don't know the answer to the question then simply don't answer. I also feel that in a lot of cases a wrong answer will cost the person posting both time and money.

I'm not necessarily defending myself, but I do feel that I hold the comedy until after the question is asked and answered, but in the future, and after Dr Honda's comments, I intend to keep it in the off topic section.

We do have an off topic section used for joking around and if people want to use this forum for communicating with friends, like Facebook we also have a PM section. I really think this forum needs to get back to basics or after efforts by many good people and several good years, it will fail.

Count me in.I'm a dickhead sometimes (a lot) when it comes to that.
The best forum needs the best answers.
