Hey Guys,

I'm in the process of changing the steering cable for a 2001 Challenger 1800. I've got the cable out all the way the jet pump. There is a nut / threading in the back part of the cable that i cannot get to with any tool.

Am i supposed to take off the entire jet pump area to change the cable out? Am i missing something?

I have already read the M2 Shop manual and sea doo shop repair manual. Do any of you have a how to the will detail step one which is to disconnect the "Steering Cable from the jet pump housing" (Step by Step).

Thanks,
John

Good News

Sorry John, but I missed your other post.

The good news is there is no nut back there for you to remove. The only nut on the hull is on the thru hull fitting and you do not have to touch it. It is only installed on a fresh install on a new hull (as long as it does not get broken). Here is a quick step by step that should work for you.

Loosen the outer bellows jam nut.
Remove the nut and bolt that secure the cable end adaptor to the steering nozzle.
Unthread the cable end adapter counting the turns as a reference (it must be reinstalled with a MINIMUM of nine turns).
Loosen the clamp on the bellows and spin the bellows off the cable (again, count the turns as this will give you a starting point for your adjustment).
Remove the two jam nuts that secure the cable to the wear housing.
Now from inside the boat undue the clamps on the inner bellows.
You should now be able to slide the cable through the thru hull fitting and pull it in to the boat.

To help with reinstalling the cable slide a length of welding rod in to the hull from the outside and tape the new cable to it to guide the cable through the pump.

Also remember to use marine grade sealant on both bellows, and the threads of the outer bellows jam nut when you install the new cable. If you have any more questions let me know.

Hey Aaron! Thanks so much for getting back to me, as I have the boat all apart right now.. : (

I've got the two bellows off and all the jam nuts. But the outside end of the cable seems to be threaded itself or something like that? Do i need to spin the cable or something to get it out of the jet housing?

Remove the two jam (is one of these nuts right behind the jet housing (between the hull nitch and the jet housing, do i need a special tool to get back there or something or is it supposed to just slide out?) nuts that secure the cable to the wear housing.

Thanks a million again Aaron!! You're totally saving my butt on this one.

Jam Nuts

You should be able to get at the outer nut with just a regular wrench and some cursing. If you're really struggling pick up a "Crowfoot" socket from any auto parts store.

Once you have the outer bellows off you will be able to see the first of the two jam nuts (outer). All you have to do is break this nut loose, and it should spin off by hand depending on corrosion and the shape of the threads. Now you should be able to start sliding the cable in to the hull of the boat. Once you get it back an inch or so reach in with your hand and spin the inner jam nut off in the same direction as the outer. Just keep working the cable back as you spin the nut off.

I hope that explains it better. Here is a pick to show the jam nuts on the wear housing that I'm talking about. (Brrr the garage floor is a bit cold this time of year:ack:)
