Hello Everyone,

I own a 2006 GTX - 4 TEC STD SeaDoo and use it in the Ocean most of the time. I clean it thoroughly after every outing. The SeaDoo has been sitting for about 6mos and this weekend my buddy and I took them out to clean and found that the steering was frozen on the GTX. We removed the seats and inspected the cable and could not see any kinks or rubbing on anything so we disconnected it from the steering arm on the jet and still could not move the steering wheel but the jet assembly moved freely. So we called our local repair shop and they quoted us 500 dollars to replace the steering cable.... :(

So I was wondering how difficult it is to replace this cable or if anyone has any advice on the replacement steps. The cable itself is 130 dollars, a little easier to swallow, so I figured my friend and I could do the install ourselves but wanted to pass it by the forum members to see just how difficult this may be.

Thank you for any comments......

John

I'm completely new to all this. BUT....I'd imagine you could try to remove it and find a way to kinda coil it up, and immerse it in some type of de-greaser and or oil overnight. And hopefully what sediments etc that are trapped in the "jacket" that goes around the cable, will let free. Then you can just work it in and out to lossen it up more. I'd try that first, might save ya $130!!:)

DATAWAY,

I have a 05' GTX and had the same problem last year. Most of the time when you put it back in the water, it will work itself free (once salt water gets back in the cable) but you can also lube the cable from the top. In the front storage compartment, take out the storage tray, pop off the fire ext. There should be a panel behind the fire ext with approx 10 fastners, pop them off with a little screw driver. cable end is in the upper left hand corner. spray allot of lube spray where the cable exits the cable tube and try to work it back and forth. that should work

That cable is sealed on both ends to keep water and other corrosive things out. You can try till the cows come home and you'll never get it freed up enough satisfy you turning needs. Yes you can replace it you self. It will take a little of time and finesse but you can do it and save yourself some cash. The cable goes in the same way it comes out. Here is a suggestion if you don't have a manual as of yet. If you want you could join as a "premium member" As a premium member you can down load a authentic seadoo manual from the seadoo manual library. In the library is a variety of manuals for almost all years and models. You can view as many as you like on line as a PDF file, or download it and print it for your personal and privet use. There are operator manuals and repair manuals for you to do your own repairs on your seadoo. The repair manuals have everything from troubleshooting, repair procedures to winterizing. It contains wire diagrams torque specs and pictures for disassemble and assemble instructions. In the spec sheets it tells everything needed to maintain oil changes, spark plug gaps and impeller wear ring tolerances. Click on the "Seadoo Manuals" link at the top of the page for more details. If you need any help or get in a jam, we are always here to answer your questions too.

have had this problem in my 03 model and have replaced steering cable once already. this time it broke free, but the plastic nut that seals the hole where the cable goes through the hull snapped and water flows into the hull. can this one nut and O ring be replaced without replacing the whole steering cable?

John..
Check out site that has microfishe, went to steeldreamswa.com, plugged in your boat under, parts finder, and looks like you can replace just those thru parts...
