Stator Question.

Just wondering the basics of how a stator works..

I have a snowmobile and I'm having electrical problems and think I have it narrowed down to a few things.
No spark but lights glow when I pull it over..

I have six wires coming out of my stator and two separate wires for the pulse/Timing coil.

So this is what I'm amusing the six wires out of the stator are but not sure.. and this is what I'm trying to figure out.

two wires are for charging.
two wires are for lighting
and two wires are for ignition.

Is this how a stator works or can work ?
If so is it possible for just the ignition coils to burn out and the charging and lighting coils still work ?

There are a ton of designs. So... to guess what the wires are, would be bad.

In a lot of 2-strokes... there is a HV charging coil for the CDI... a Trigger coil... and a "Lighting" coil. (for power) But... like in the 800 rotax engine.... it could be a 3 phase alternator, with a pulse coil, and a ground.

In both of those situations... you have 6 wires.

And yes... you can burn out just one coil. AND... depending on the design... you may be able to change the one bad coil.

What year, make, model is your sled?

it's a 96 yamaha vmax 600. I know the CDI is good for a fact, swapped it in a running sled.. and bypassed all the kill switches and still no spark.. but the light glowing when I pull it over baffles me unless the coils are independent on the stator .. that's why I'm trying to figure out how it works..

I also have now volts going to my ignition coil, the one with the plug wires coming out of it, so i know the problem is before the CDI.

The pulse coil is on the outside of the flywheel.. it's a small little box.. Does this supply all the power to the CDI ?

OK... a quick search looks like it's a 3 phase system, with a simple trigger coil.

So... 3 wires are your alternator. There is a ground... and 2 wires are your pulse coil.

OK... since you have a 3 phase system... you have a DC-CDI, and if it would start on a different sled... then did you check your ignition coil? If yes.... then all that's left (other than a break in a wire somewhere) is your trigger coil.

Well I bought a parts sled and swapped stators and she started right up, Even know it tested good it was bad! Thanks Honda for the replies !
