I have a 14.5 Challenger with twin 717, if I plug in the tether and I get my beeps will it start if I manually turn the engine over or does the starter button have to be pushed two. Why I am asking is if I'm out on the lake and I lose a starter, Could I pull the plastic flywheel cover off and wrap something around it (rope or leather belt) and get the engine started. I had snowmobiles where I broke the recoil rope and just wrapped the rope around the clutch and start it, actually pretty easy.

I think it would if you could spin it fast enough and you did it while the MPEM was still alive. You could test this electrical question by jumpering the starter solenoid with a screwdriver.

By clutch I think you are referring to the pto, and I think this question has been asked before and I'm pretty sure the consensus was you're working against too much compression to start and engine manually.

Sorry about assuming you knew sleds had the clutch on the PTO side but yes they do and I have actually started 1000 cc three cylinder sleds by wrapping a rope around the clutch, it's not that hard (I've got a 1100 Turbo four stroke sled now and I know I won't be manually starting it if the starter goes down). I was just wondering sense the starter button kills the engine that maybe it would have to be pressed to bring the ignition up or just by plugging in the tether that would be enough to bring the ignition up. I haven't had a starter problem I was just wondering if I did.

Putting the key on and pressing the start button energizes the MPEM for about 33 seconds. If you can get it to start manually in that 33 seconds, it will run. That being said, I have had to start a SkiDoo and I thought I would give my boat a try as well. It didn't work out so well. There isn't the little notch to put the knot in, so getting a good 'bite' isn't easy. I guess that is why I have two motors in my boat. "two is one, one is none" (SEAL moto)
