Starter Question

I have my starter off of my 97 GSX Sea-Doo. When it is on the ski it will not engage the flywheel. I took it off and tested it with a 2 am charger. It pushes out the gear and then it retracts right away. Should it stay out or retract like it's doing? Can ya help.

It should react and when the power stops or the rpm's hit 600 rpm's it shuts down and retracts. The "Bendix" sort of speak is spring loaded to have it return. You could take it apart and see if it is corroded inside, or have a stater rebuild company check it out.

I guess the question for me is, How can I tell if the starter is good or bad. I'm watching the starter and when I hook it up to a 2 amp battery charger I can see the gear on the starter push out and then goes right back. It doesn't stay pushed out like I thought it would. I see what your saying above, but if the current doesn't change, shouldn't the bendex stay out?

An addition to the issue- I constantly have a 12 Volt low error on the read out, but the battery is charges to 12.4 and I have 12.4 at the starter in the craft. Not sure what to make of it. But it shouldn't have an impact on the above, because im testing the starter out of the craft. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks for your help by the way.

check the ground connection/wire for ground..while its out, remove the grey shield from inside, and with spark plugs removed, try turning pto, see if any resistance...

Timmy,

I don't think I totally understand. What am I looking for when I turn the PTO. Is it just to be sure that it turns. And should I feel any resistance? I just want to ensure that I know what to look for. When the starter is in the ski it turns but doesnt engage. Every now and again it will engage and I can start it, but mostly it just spins without engaging.

first off, a 2 amp charger? i am surprised it turns starter at all. hook it to a battery. the bendix should snap out and stay there. engine rpms spinning bendix faster than the starter snap it back in. next. 12 low. replace the battery. just cause it shows volts doesn't mean it has enough power.
