Starter is bad on a 1999 speedster

So we towed the boat 2.5 hours for the family's massive cookout at the lake. We were about to put in when we realized one motor would not turn over. It made a "weak sounding attempt" at turning over the first push, then nothing but a click. The other motor started like a champ! We had 2 car mechanics there look at it, they both thought it sounded like the starter. They tried to "knock" the starter and it made a couple of attempts to "spin" and almost start, but we stopped messing with it bc we knew we would have to knock it to start it again. They checked the solioniod (sp???) and thought it was ok and all wires were tight. My questions are 1) does this sound accurate? No starter just gets you clicks??? 2) does any seadoo starter fit or will I have to order one for that exact boat. Like would a starter from a jet ski with a 787 use the same one, or does the boat have a specially designed one? I have the dual 787's. On an even more ironic note, the starter switch went out, after a couple of hours, on the 1998 Sea Ray we were tubing that is the parent in laws! Great day at the lake! We ended up tubing off of two older jet skis!!!! The 25 kids or so there were not happy!
 
before you replace the starter check a couple of things. Check all your connections to make sure their clean (not corroded), pull your spark plugs and turn the drive shaft manually to make sure the engine is free(not binding up). While you have the plugs out ground them to the posts on the electrical box, cover the spark plug holes with a towel and try turning it over in short 2-3 second bursts so you don't overheat the starter, try this several times, if a significant amount of oil blows out reinstall your plugs and try to crank normally.. If it doesn't crank your most likely looking at a new starter or rebuilding your current one. If you have to buy a new one try going OEM, but be forewarned their expensive, in the 250.00 and up range, if yours can be rebuilt more like in the 75.00 range depending on labor..

Try pulling the plugs and seeing if she'll crank first. My 1998 Sporster 1800 was bound up from oil sitting on pistons over the winter and the starter couldn't overcome the compression, wound up burning up/overheating a starter..

A starter from any 787 engine should fit if needed, just check your part numbers..

If you still have an OEM starter... it's easy to rebuild, and they are 100x better than an import starter. Also... sometimes spinning the starter with the plugs out will help bed the brushes a little better, and it may crank after.

Finally, knocking on the starter doesn't normally help on a seadoo. The "Old Mechanics Trick" of knocking on a starter is to free up a solenoid on a car starter. AND... since your solenoid is in the electrical box... it doesn't help.
 
Hey guys! Do any of you guys know If my starter is an 8 or 9 tooth bendix? Also could you take a 8 bendix off an put a 9 on a newer starter to make it work?
