Starter Gear/Spring Ingested into Magneto/Flywheel...What to do

Today I finally got my ski running like normal and I spent about 15 minutes out on the water and slowed to an idle, I could hear something rattling or clinking so I shut it down and peeked inside. Everything was tight and looked good so I decided to start it and listen some more. Well all I could get was a click, I had just charged the battery for 12 hours and it started fine 15 minutes ago. So I tried to turn the PTO Wheel and couldn't even budge it, no wonder the starter had trouble. I floated back to shore and got a tow to the ramp and went back to the cabin to investigate!

I pulled the plugs and I could now spin the shaft 360 degrees but very stiff and could hear a grinding sound like metal rubbing on metal, with shavings. I pulled the magneto cover and found shavings galore along with chunks of a spring. The spring from my starter had gone a trip or two around the flywheel/gear and was in bits. It looked like the starter gear teeth had been rubbing on the back of that gear and were all shaved down and blue from being hot. So I pulled the starter, it still spins freely and should be easy to get a new gear and spring for, however the motor still grinds when I spin it. I am guessing my magneto is in pieces or there are more parts stuck behind that flywheel/gear. What is the best way to take this thing off and is there anything I should replace while I'm in there?

hey Montana...need to remove the flywheel and inspect, especially w/ shavings in there,..good way to pop fuses instantly..

New Starter Gears

Got the Flywheel Assebmbly pulled today, looks like the starter gear had slid back about 1/4 of an inch and was rubbing up on the casing making it difficult to spin, below are some pictures. So going to order a new spring and gear for my starter and a new starter gear for the flywheel assembly.

Missing a spring and teeth are chewed up.

Scratches on the clutch from the starter gear.

You can see where the gear rubbed on the casing.

Starter Gear Teeth slightly chewed.

Bluing on the gear from high heat.

Any Suggestions? I am going to replace the two gears and carry on at this point.

Trev...dont know about it being not balanced now, but..if in market for flywheel, Seadoosource.com, tons of used ones...

Is it worth the risk? New ones retail for 471 bucks! (gear and magneto). So I ordered one :(. I got it for $360 tho but I just want this thing together and to be done working on it for a while. Starter gear/clutch was $127, today my butt is sore! (from ridiculous prices) I guess that's what a savings is for though.
