Hello all,

I'd like to know the average start time for the typical 787 motor? I believe mine take extremely long and i'd like to improve that if possible. I've only had it for a few months now and have been out on the water about 5 times total.

The right motor - I believe has a sticky RAVE valve, even after cleaning, but that's it's own issue that i'm hoping to get resolved soon.
I can start this motor cold or warm after about 30 seconds to up to 2 minutes of cranking.

The left motor - runs flawlessly.
This motor can take about 5 minutes to start, regardless of the engine being cold or warm (being off for about 30 minutes to an hour).

Cold, I am always choking the motors. Warm, I tend to have to choke a little bit, especially to keep them running as they will only idle and will die if I give them any throttle. I tend to get started up, idle for about a minute or two and then I can gradually apply throttle. Carb issue getting fuel perhaps?

The only thing i've tried to remedy this issue thus far is to set the throttle to about 10-20% when starting warm, which has helped slightly.

Thanks for any help available. I would really like to be able to push off a sandbar, start up and get out of the way without just floating about for 5+ minutes or praying I don't bump into anything before I get started.

It sounds like you are leaking air into the fuel system and loosing prime. Check your fuel cap, vent check valves hose connections and fuel strainer. Your fuel system should hold a couple pounds of pressure. It should only take a few seconds of cranking with the choke after they have been sitting to fire. After they are started for the first time in the morning they should fire right away for the rest of the day with no choke.

Also might be time for a carb rebuild if it hasn't been done for a few years.

Thank you mikidymac. I went ahead and ordered all of the carb parts and tools needed from your Carb Rebuild article and will get them rebuilt soon - I don't have much of a past history on the boat, but I know the RAVE valves weren't cleaned in a long time based on what I found last week when cleaning them.

I'll go ahead and check all of the other items listed this weekend.

Thanks again!
