I reacently purchased a 97 sea Doo sportster with a single 717 rotax engine. This is my first Sea Doo and not sure what I should expect from it. It starts ok and idles good in low speed right up to half throttle but as soon as I go past half throttle to 3/4 speed the rpm’s wind up and the boat slows down. I quickly have to slack back throttle to prevent damage. Could this be cavitation? I can’t seem to get any performance with it and have a hard time getting the boat to plane even with just myself in it at 180 Also. When I have the throttle past half I notice a lot of white smoke coming from exhaust. Also even if I am fortunate to get it to plane when slowing down it sounds like the empelor is making a scraping noise like metal on metal. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

You need to replace your wear ring and inspect your impeller because you are right about cavitation. If the engine is revving up and you aren't moving at the same speed it is cavitation and you will need a new wear ring

Thanks for the reply. I will check that out. Once I have it working good again in your opinion would the 717 rotax have enough power to have 3 or 4 people in the 97 sportster and still reach plane?

I would imagine if it is rated for that many people

Well yes and no....

It can do it, but it will complain allot !
As in rev to 6500 and wait 20 seconds to get on plane.

With one or two people its ok and feels good once it gets on plane.
I've had over 900 lbs of people in mine (5) and it did work but took quite a bit to get on plane. After that it was ok. Its design is to be efficient and to carry people and their stuff over a long distance. There is a group K article on it.

I am getting ready to do some upgrades and started reading about impellers. On my 97 sportster there is a stock impeller p/n 204 160 004. I read so many good things about the skat-trak and pro series promising faster acceleration and top speed and now I have my hopes up. Can anybody tell me what would be best suited for my boat with a single 717 rotax as I have no experience and trying to get the most out of this engine.

Thanks.
