Hi guys, adding to my ongoing issues with this boat this season, my starboard engine wouldnt go over 5000 rpm in the water. When i got it home I checked the impeller and found a bamboo sized piece of weed stuck in the blades. So i'm hoping thats why that engine wouldn't go over 5000 rpm. Since i had to take the nozzle and everything off to get the stick out i decided to check the pump oil. It seemed contaminated so i took off the cone and it was mostly full of water. When i checked it before the season it was full of oil and no contamination. What could cause the housing to now be full of water?

I'll attach a picture of the impeller, the outlet side looks good. the inlet seems a little beat up. The clearance between the wear ring is within spec. what do you guys think?

Thanks,

Justin

If it were mine, I'd blow the water out with compressed air and do a 10 min 10psi pressure check before putting oil back in, then go from there. I think it won't hold oil for long if it fails a pressure check.

And, I always check mine at the end of the season just in case it has water in it I don't want it to sit that way all winter.

As far as water in your pump is probably due to the "O" ring being pinched and not seated when cone was reinstalled allowing water to get in. Need to make sure the needle bearings etc aren't rusted....

I checked everything over, nothing is rusted which is good. Put the cone back on and pressure tested the pump. It held good pressure. Filled it back up. Just gotta take it out on the water and see how it runs. Hopefully all is good now.

Noswal_j i see you're from Tecumseh. You go to the swimhole on sundays?

Haven't been there this year. Spending a lot of time at light house cove this year. Between riding in lake st.clair and the Thames river...find it good place to whip around like a race track...:driving:

So I'm out on the lake for the first time since I pulled the stick out of the impeller. And the engine still won't go over 5000 rpm. After the throttle lever is moved a little passed half it won't increase rpms. The engine has a deeper sound than normal kinda sounds muffled and doesn't really seam to have much power. it is also idling lower than before.
Anyone have any ideas or things I can check?
Thanks

Check your compression. Could be the stick in the impeller was coincidence. And, are you sure your bearing weren't messed up from running it with water in the cone? What rpm can you reach if you remove the pump and driveshaft?

Hmm, which engine is that? Specifically, does it have rave valves and if so, are they clean/working or stuck/sticking?

Not sure if it has the waterbox valve either, but could be that valve isn't shutting the water flow down and there's too much water flowing into the cone(stinger) pipe?

Are you sure the throttle plates are opening fully?

If you've adjusted the throttle linkage, did you set the oil pump lever arm to the correct position once idle speed adjustment was completed?

Maybe one of the above, just trying to cover all the bases......

Compression is 135 and 135. The bearings seemed ok but maybe i missed something there. Could bad bearings in the pump cause this?
Out of the water the engine will get up to 7000 rpm and thats with everything still hooked up to it. but it does sound different from before. Should I still take the driveshaft off and run it to see how it sounds?

I took the cap of the rave valves and i can move them freely.
It has the twin 787's. Not sure if it has the water valve, where would that be?
Throttle plates are opening fully.
How do i set the oil pump lever arm? didnt see that in the manual

Probably not, I was just curious if something was bound up but it doesn't sound like it.

Your water valve is on your muffler, looks like a rave valve if you have one. The troubleshooting guide says its a possible cause of low revs. Sportster-2001 has some good advice there for ya.

I swapped the water valves from one side to the other, still has the same results.
how much fuel should be in the fuel filters when its running? i noticed that engine barely has anything in it. the port side has a little bit more in it when its running. i swapped the filters around and it didnt make a difference.
