Speedster & BMW are alike - both smoke (new-bee questions)

Please allow me to introduce myself, I'm a man with debt and waste (new-bees first post revisited);
Anyway, I'm glad I found this forum because I am now the proud owner of a 1995 Speedster needing TLC. As a truck mechanic for 30 years plus, I have little experience with 2 strokes. A few observations in which I need guidance;
- any good links that describe the oiling & cooling system in detail
- starboard engine has oil coming from exhaust (both appear to run well - 145>150 comp. each cyl.)

Update; The clear hose from tuned pipe to exhaust cone is to bleed trapped air **

Reading thru other threads - it appears previous owner is running premix & my oiling system "appears" connected.

Looks clean

Welcome... and to try to answer in order...

1) The manual has great info on both.

2) It can be normal. At idle, the exhaust can load, and it will spit it out later. OR... the center crank seals could be weeping a little... and here again... when cold, it will spit it out. Since it's a 2-stroke, it can burn off the extra oil without an issue, and by the time it's warm, it will be fine. Basically... I wouldn't worry about it. (yet)

3) Without seeing it directly........ I'm going to assume it's the water injection into the exhaust. It helps keep it cool, and helps the overall volume levels.

Thanks for the info - Photo of #3 - Update; The clear hose from tuned pipe to exhaust cone is to bleed trapped air

Well that should be water in the hose. If its oil then that isn't normal. You might have a crack in the water jacket in the manifold or pipe allowing exhaust into the water jacket??? If you remove the hose on the lower part and start the engine does smoke come out of the hose? Do this out of the water on the trailer.

If your oil injection system is in tact and operation and you are also running premix, that's the source of excessive smoke. Use one or the other personally I would use oil injection.

From the manual it appears correct - not sure why it goes from one part of the exhaust to the other on same engine?????

I would assume since the 717 has no water control valve it's plumbed that way for extra cooling water to the hose between the exhaust manifold and the water box. This is a common problem on a 787 when the bellows on the water control valve fails the connection hose section will overheat and fail. So on a 717 extra cooling water is supplied, could be designed that way, could be an after thought.

My 96GTI is plumbed this way and as far as I know all 717's are also.

I'm still learning the engine IDs - The plates on mine say 657X

Yep, that's right, pretty much the same engine. 80hp vs 85hp The water box is like the muffler, except it has water in it.

I read a post about an updated MPEM (multi-purpose electronic module) but I can't find it. From this photo - is this the new version? I am also looking for a fuse identification chart. Thanks for the help, I'm almost ready for the maiden voyage.

Moderators; When searching threads on issues, many are closed and they are not that old. Why is that?
