Speedster 657x, port engine wont start, no spark

Speedster 657x, one engine died and wont start.
The working engine can spark across a 1" gap but the bad engine has no visible spark. (Tho it does have *some* juice - ouch)
when I crank the bad engine, the tach shows a smidgen of rpms as expected.
I'm going to try putting the coil from the working engine on the bad one and see what happens.

I originally misdiagnosed the no-spark condition I guess. When cranking the engine it made a noise that can best be described as "expensive". I tore it down to find a wrist pin clip came out and ... now I'm shopping for a replacement engine.
