While getting my boat ready for the season, the shop informed me that my steering is stiff and that it is due to a rusted steering cable. I was told that this was a potential safety issue and that the boat would lose control if this cable snapped. I was quoted $500 for the cable and 4 hrs labor. I went down to the shop and the steering does feel tight. Anyone have this issue in the past? If it's a safety issue, it obviously needs to be addressed. What do you think of the pricing? I found the steering cable online for $360-400, but I'm not sure what other parts/materials are required. Does the price and labor time seem reasonable?

Thanks in advance!

Disconnect the steering cable from the steering nozzles to confirm it’s the cable

they are not nice to replace

cables last around 5 to 6 years then rapidly go down here from there

Anytime a highspeed vehicle loses steering its bad news.

I priced the cable at $380, let's just assume the shop wants to make $120 on the part; maybe the list is $500, who knows.

gazzaskirepair say's it's a pain, so 4hrs is probably within reason.

With that being said, there's no harm in shopping around; maybe you can find a place that will charge you $480 for the part and 3.5HRs

Sounds like one you'll have to eat.
