I want to install a 2nd battery. Do I hook the ground of battery 2 to the negative of battery 1 or somewhere else?

It kind of depends on how things are laid out in the bilge. If both batteries are sitting side by side I usually connect a short 1 foot jumper from the negative terminal of the primary battery to the negative terminal of the secondary battery.

If you prefer to run both negative terminal cables separately to the same engine block termination point, ground loops still aren't an issue and the current capacity of the negative cables is quadrupled.

^^^ agreed. More importantly run same size, condition and age of batteries to avoid parasitic drain between batteries. Unless they are isolated at rest.

My two cents. 1) Hook each battery with its own ground to the boat. 2) Make sure each are isolated.

When you need to replace/recharge/maintain a battery that way you can just pull it and not affect the other.
