Hi everyone. This is my first time dealing with the engine of my Speedster 150, 155 HP, and while trying to replace spark plugs I stumbled upon an issue with the socket. I have a LONG 5/8 Craftsman socket, but it does not reach the plugs. Any advice what socket is needed and where to get it.

Thanks!

Pick up a deep-well socket with a rubber insert / gasket so it grips and holds the spark plug while you lift it out...

Thanks! My dealer recommended 5/8" socket. Is it right, i.e. is it the same as 16 mm? Also I thought I could use a socket extension. Would extention be ok?

Thanks again!

I assume he meant 3/8 drive.

16 mm equal .629 inches. Which is bigger than half an inch. 3/8 is smaller than half inch.

So get a 16mm spark plug socket that is 3/8th drive.

They said 5/8" deep socket, and I got Craftsman 5/8", which I just tested with the dealer-sold plugs (NKG DCPR8E). The socket fits the plugs with very little play.

5/8 is basically 16mm

I would get a 6 point socket. If you get a spark uh socket they are almost always 6 point and should have the rubber insert.

(5/8 equals .625)

Yes, you are absolutely right. The dealer was wrong, as 5/8 is a bit too big / not completely snug on the plugs and might strip the edges. Ordering 15 mm, 6 point deep socket ($4 Craftsman on eBay). It has no rubber insert, but will use the Coil Cap to retrieve the plugs. Is that what the purpose of the rubber insert is?

I would think any 5/8 deep socket intended for plug removal would work - Just checked my toolbox and see the one I used this fall is a 1/2 inch drive with a 3 inch body - it worked well - I also have a 3/8 drive one with is only about 2 1/2 inch body- do not know if it will work but it is made for spark plugs so I expect it would. Both are craftsman.
Of course you need an extension as the cavity is deep.
