I just got two use 1996 XPS jet-skis and for this forum which is sweet. Everyone here is really nice and helpful. One jet-ski is fine but the VTC don't work but it's ok with me and the second one is premixed cause the tank was leaking I guess, so here are my question if anyone can answer them for the one with the premix.

1. Is the same oil used to premix as is put in the tank for injection?

2. Whats a god premix %?

3. How can I check it see if the blocked off the pump or are just starving it of oil?

4. Should I fix the leak and check the pump?

Thanks in advance for any help. You guys rule

Hey Kaos. Congrats on the new purchase, you'll have fun with those.
Hope this helps ya out.

1. Yes, same oil.

2. Everything I've seen says 40:1

3. I kinda don't understand what your asking here.............. but I can say on your model you should not use the block off plate instead of the oil pump. You still need oil going to the rotary shaft in the engine. Does use hardly any oil but must have some to function properly. If your determined to run premix, you need to fix or buy a new reservoir tank. Fill it about half way up with oil and hook the line coming out of the bottom to the oil pump. Take the oil pump off and remove the shaft and put it back on. Me personally use the injection pump b/c it's such a pain premixing your gas every time and you will use way less oil, which is expensive.

In VTC do you mean VTS (variable trim system)?

Thanks for the fast reply and yes I meant VTS. I know it helps with stability but i have rode the skis and they are fine where they are for the most part. Plus finding the parts to fix I'm just not sure its worth it.
As for the 3 question you answered it for me. He didnt have oil in the tank so ill have to check that out but I did fix the tank and I was just wondering if the pump might be bad as well being that it was dry. I guess I can try the 40:1 mixed gas and add oil in tank and watch if it goes down right? or is there a better way to make sure the oil injection system is working?

Thanks again
James

So the oil pump is on there? If yes, then take it off look to see if the shaft has been removed from the mag side of the engine. I've heard of people mixing 50:1 and filling up there oil tank and then running it to see if the level was dropping. I tested mine by the procedure in the manual. If it does drop, pump is good and no more premix. If pump is bad take the shaft out and go premix at 40:1 while leaving the main oil line hooked up. Or..... buy a new pump.

Oil pump........

If you determine the oil pump is indeed good, you'll need to make sure it is syncronized to the carbs. There is a procedure in the manual for this. With your premium membership, I don't see a reason to quote the procedure in the manual.

You'll also find a test for your oil pump to make sure it works.

Your oil tank? If you stay premix because of the tank leaking, then make sure you have enough oil in the clear plastic hose going to your rotary. I'd fill the house up to, within a few inches of your tank. Then attach the vent line back to the tank. You only need oil in the rotary chamber and what you can see in the line would be enough. You don't need to keep a supply in the tank itselfl. But as nswillin has said, it doesn't use much, but over time, a little will seep out from between the seals and into the combustion chamber..........

nswillin yes the pump is in there I think. Not sure what it looks like but both have the ski's have all the same stuff. Is the pump the whit thing on the front side of the engine? Thanks for all the help guys. I think ill add oil for a ride tomorrow and then check for the shaft. Do i need to take any apart to see it or is it out side the motor? I'm a noob to marine and the motors are much different looking but same operation i think.

seadoosnipe thank for the input about the the oil in the line thing that makes sense just enough to keep it lucubrated. I'm looking at the manuals to to see all that make these things tick. I love sites like this.

Thanks
James

The oil pump is kinda small and should have a disk in front, two little fittings coming out the top with little clear hoses connected to them that go to the carbs. Mines gray, not white, but it's a 2000, dont know with the 96's. There's a good pic of it in the manual where it talks about pump alignment. To check the pump shaft you must remove the oil pump, get a mirror or something and look at the front of the engine where you took off the pump, there should be the end of a shaft that you can see. that's the part you'll pull out if you decide if the pump is working or not.

Cool thanks alot nswillin you the man. I must say i've been a two wheel freak my whole life but I think now I love the water more. I will post my findings once I figure things out.
