Some questions about performance

I just bought a 2003 Utopia 205 with a 200 hp EFI Merc. I took it out for the first time today and only had about 15 minutes because a storm came in. My question is about RPM to MPH, I was running at about 5000 rpm and was going 30 mph. Is that a decent ratio for these motors? It just didn't seem to start up and get moving as I expected. I know I need to get the M2 manual but any insight for starting procedures would help. Thanks.

I don't have data for the 200 but my 2003 Utopia 205 would do 38mph at 5000, and that was a GPS speed, if you are getting 30mph at 5000 from the boat speedometer then I would say that you need to look at the clearance of your impeller to your wear ring.

When you accelerated did the engine seem to overrev as the boat got moving? Other item to check is that she is firing on all cylinders. If you just bought the boat pull the plugs and have a look see.

Thank you sir! I have a GPS and need to check it that way as well. Seemed kind of sluggish to get moving. The dealer "supposedly" went through the motor prior to purchase but I will check the plugs as well. How do I check this: "I would say that you need to look at the clearance of your impeller to your wear ring". Thanks again.

The clearance is the space between the impeller and the housing of the jet pump (wear ring). Here is a picture of the impeller with the stator vanes and steering nozzle removed.2012-09-16_17-48-35_115.jpg However, just to get the measurement you need to climb under the boat to the intake grate. installed.jpg. Yours will not have as much space between the grates. Remove the 4 bolts that hold it in place and then you can measure the clearance . Your boat will have the M2 jet pump the engine size does not factor into the pump. So here are the measurements.

1. Place impeller in wear ring bore and push to one side.

2. Measure clearance between impeller blades and wear ring with a feeler gauge. If clearance is over 0.100 in. (2.54 mm), replace impeller and wear ring.

NOTE: Impeller wear usually accounts for 75% of the wear. Reducing the clearance can improve both top speed and acceleration performance.

COMPONENT SPECIFICATIONS
Wear Ring Bore Diameter 7.273 - 7.283 in. (184.73 - 184.98 mm)

Impeller Outside Diameter 7.225 - 7.235 in. (183.52 - 183.77 mm)

Clearance between Impeller and Wear Ring 0.038 - 0.058 in. (0.96 - 1.47 mm)

3. Inspect leading edges of the impeller for nicks and damage. Leading edges should be sharpened to 0.020 in. (0.51 mm) on the outer 1/2 of the leading edge for optimum performance. Dull leading edges can increase cavitation during initial acceleration.

cwingnut: Welcome.

Looks like Racereddie has you covered.

Also... a jet pump makes pressure exponentially. (assuming everything is working right) And... the boat becomes more efficient as it comes out of the water. That's why you can be "Plowing" water at 4000 RPM... and be doing 30'ish at 5000. But as Eddie said... 30~35 is about right. But... check it with a GPS before getting too worried.

Also... how much weight you have in the boat will play a factor. So... were you by yourself, or did you have 3~4 people on the boat?

As a final FYI... The pump in my Islandia is perfect... and I'm getting about 30 mph at 4500 rpm, with only me on board, but full fuel, oil, and fresh water.

Thanks everyone for all the great info. I did have the wife and kids in the boat so all seems to look good so far. I am going to DL the manual tonight and go through it. Thanks again!

Just to help us out in the future... add the year of the boat to your signature info.

Also... if you got to seadoo's web site... you can DL the owner's manual for your boat. (if you need it) It's mostly fluff... but it's nice to have.
