I just sold my 97 GTX's. Both skis had exactly 43 hours on them. I had them out 3 weeks before I sold them and they ran fine. One of them was a little slow on take off and was lacking top speed. I could visually see the the wear ring was shot. The other might have had .02 Max clearance. When I sold them I also gave him 2 new wear rings. He has never owned Jets skis. I sent him step by step instructions I found off of here and emailed them to him.

He calls me yesterday and tells me that he replaced the wear ring and took them to the lake for the holiday weekend. He told me that NEITHER on would go over 5 MPH. but were still reaching around 8000 rpms. When I last had them out 3 weeks prior to the sale date the one(good wear ring) had a a top speed of around 52-54. The other was topped out at about 40 MPH.

I asked him if he had changed out both wear rings and he said no. The one ski that he changed out the wear ring on he might not have put it back together right. Its very odd that both skis will all of a sudden do 5 MPH max now. He is bringing them over tonight and we are going to drop them in the water. Knowing the skis ran great and only have 43 hours on them, what else should I look for before putting them in the water. I know this is short notice but but any advice will be great. Also, I asked him what the spline looked like and he said it was perfect.

It sounds like the wear ring replacment wasn't installed correctly. It is leaking air in the system somewhere. It needs a good look over to determine the problem. The other seadoo might just need the wear ring know too, or he already messed with it and didn't mention that.

I know it is probable that the wear ring was installed wrong. For the most part, it has been my experience that a wear ring does not go bad over night unless it has been damaged. The last time I had them out the one with the good wear ring was a rocket out of the hole and I pulled skiers and a tube all day long. I guess I will try to figure it out when he arrives with the skis tonight.

Thanks

you said they were new to pwc's by any chance did he run over a clump of seaweed? I know if that happens basically they make alot of noise but dont go anywhere.

just a thought

Update and more information from the purchaser

I am the guy who bought the skis, and Shane and I looked them over and discussed what I have done so far. Here is an update.

1) Replaced the wear ring in ski #1 last week, but did not use silicone the pump to the hull per the instructions of the repair guy at the shop where I bought the oil for the cone. During our discussion today, we decided it must be sucking in air? I pulled apart the pump of ski #2 and there was no silicone (see below). Is silicone needed or not? It looks like the wear ring makes sufficient seal.
2) We looked over the skis this evening, and ski #2 had a torn up wear ring. I came home and took it apart and replaced the wear ring, but noticed there was no silicone around the pump. Is it needed or not? Is special silicone required or can I just use RTF?

Thanks for any help you provide.
