So THAT's why I got a $1500 Speedster!

Hi all. Haven't been on here long and only got started recently with SeaDoo boats. I helped my dad put together a '95 Explorer last year and then stumbled on a $1500 '95 Speedster that I snapped up. It ran but I winterized it with a plan to take it out this year.

I did a few minor things to it (new carrier bearing, etc.) and did a trailer test at the local launch tonight. Everything worked ok except... water was coming into the engine bay. I tracked it down to a hole under the port side through-hull fitting for the shaft. Here's a picture:

Where could something like that have come from? Is it normal? My first thought that it might be a bilge drain but with a bad valve on the other end. I thought before I start shoving Splashzone in the hole I should ask the experts on here to make sure I wasn't plugging up something with a purpose.

If it's not normal, is there a reason something like this might occur? Thanks for any help you all can provide. :cheers:
 
That photo you have there looks like a factory made hole, LOL!

I think I'd fill the hull with water as it sits on the trailer and see where the water comes out the bottom. Or you could try shoving a wire out through the hole to find where it goes.
 
I'd be curious to see what's under the hose for the carrier bearing. It it's an aluminum thru hull fitting then I'd say someone f'd up putting that on since you need to cut the old plastic one off when the bearing seizes to the shaft. Perhaps they made a mistake. Regardless, you will need to clean the glass very good , then patch it. The hull is two layers and you could get water trapped in there.

Thanks. It's the dark plastic like the other one. This is really weird - like a factory defect or something spilled there which was corrosive. Once the shaft and everything is out I'll get a better look in there, but given that it's had all of the slops draining through it I'm anticipating some Dremel work to make sure all of the oil is gone. Would a simple Marine-Tex repair be suitable or would a full fiberglass patch be required?
