Is this just maintenance or can i expect better performance????

they were real bad, but they cleaned up real nice after soaking them in gas and wire wheel brush.

I have to pick up new o-rings and gaskets tomorrw and put them back in.

It's just a maintenance thing unless real bad and hanging. I use easy off oven cleaner, it just wipes off. That way I don't scratch the coating on the valves.

oven cleaner!? awesome! bc carb cleaner and 2+2 take quite a while to disolve the gunk... thanks for the tip!

Yeah its just maintenance. But if you have one get too gunked up and it sticks, you will feel the hesitation up around 5000 RPM. Ive seen worse than yours. I clean em every spring when i get the boat ready. Dont use a wire wheel either, its too harsh and you can actually wear the metal down. They are designed to have a specific tolerance.

Any idea what that tolerance is? Cant seem to find it anywhere.

Also, dont usually see it mentioned but having a clean sensing hole in the cylinder and valve body would be critical to operation as well.

I have no clue...I just know when they get worn down they get sloppy and flop around, which causes an oil leak. Ive also heard of it causing them to break.

I just found this out. The valve was so sloppy in the housing it was the source of the oil leak...

Thats usually how people find the problem...an oil leak they cant find.
I was concerned bc this happened on a reman with 7-9 hours on the clock. I guess this one slipped thru the cracks bc these used housings should have been tossed in the bin, they were so worn... I received my second housing assy from SBT today when I informed them about the partially melted exhaust valve piston on the MAG cylinder... Their customer service is excellent, and I`m squared away...

op, sorry for the off topic...

Im going to get the o-rings and gaskets tomorrow and I was going to compare mine to new ones. I'll take a pair of Micometers and see if there is any difference in thickness and report back to you guys.

I cleaned my slots using a shop-towel (paper towel) wrapped around a paint stick and made sure the slot was covered by the piston.

Need to be VERY careful, however, to not let any crud get loose and onto the piston.
